10-year plan to make Kuala Lumpur the best city to live in

New Straits Times

By Shuhada Elis and Alang Bendahara

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - An area four times the size of Singapore is set to form Greater KL, which will be transformed into a leading global city over 10 years.

Greater KL will be a sprawling liveable city and economic hub of 10 municipalities, more open space, improved waterfronts and superior public transportation system, possibly with underground trains.

The inclusion of Klang and Sepang, among others, brings stretches of the Selangor coastline into Greater KL, which will also have the green belt of Templer's Park as Selayang, an area of 54,559ha, is in.

Other municipalities that will make up the 279,327ha Greater KL are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Ampang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Kajang.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, who is in charge of the Economic Planning Unit, told the New Straits Times that Greater KL was about driving the economy and improving the quality of life.

"Today, people want an environment where they can live, work and play." By 2020, seven out of 10 Malaysians are expected to live in urban areas like Greater KL, which, according to unofficial sources, will have an immediate population of about 7.2 million.

Nor Mohamed said an investor or a brain surgeon who previously screened best countries to work at now looked for the best cities.

"Will it be Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta or Bangkok?" Nor Mohamed said given the need for a more efficient public transportation system, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) has been given the green light to upgrade and extend the Light Rail Transit coverage to ensure seamless interconnectivity.

"It may also build an underground train system."

The concept of liveable city also means pedestrian-friendly space, which includes a wider network of covered pedestrianwalkways in the city centre and an efficient solid waste management system.

"It is anticipated that Greater KL will be able to attract and retain Malaysian and foreign knowledge workers." The success of Greater KL will help the country reap RM115 billion a year in income over the next 10 years.

Other ideas include establishing an international financial district near Bukit Bintang.

"This will not only create job opportunities but also attract specialists." Two areas identified for re-development are the Sungai Besi air base and the Sungai Buloh Rubber Research land. "We want the suburbs to benefit from Greater KL as well."

Peninsular Malaysia Town and Country Planning Department deputy director-general I (planning) Kamalruddin Shamsudin said Greater KL was a new term to many as Kuala Lumpur never had a metropolitan area like Greater London or Greater Toronto.

He added that Kuala Lumpur also needed to improve on its 79th position out of 140 cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit's survey on liveability.

Nice idea, but the non-progressive lazybums there may hinder its development, just like with the Multimedia Super Corridor initiative.

donch like that....give them a chance ok?

Lets wait for Iskandar to flop first...hee hee

WHy do you people like to make fun of Malaysia?

In 20 years, your two bedroom HDB flat will cost about $500-600K while your wages and that of your chldren will be not much different from today. Your hospitals will be so crowded that tents will be used as the corridors will be use up. Right now you wait for 6 months to see government dentist and 2-4 months to see government specialist. It will get worse.

Your public transport will be on the brink of collapse daily as 7million people cramp on the tiny island manage to go to work. Can you imagine all like this in 20 years in Singapore?

In 20 years middle income Malaysian will have better education and healthcare and live in a landed property. They will have enough for their old age and still have their property and don't have to downgrade to have money for old age.

Once UMNO is gone, public spending will be better used for education and healthcare and public transport.

The future in Singapore is very very bleak for its middle income and lower income population. In Malaysia the future is bright even for the next 30 years.

For the last 20-30 yrs.. I keep hearing SG is going down and M'sia is going up... I see nothing. Dude, the result speaksfor itself. It is not the M'sian to blame but your policies and political will power to succeed.

You think Singapore today is better than 20 years ago? Our healthcare system is horrible. It takes months to see a government specialist doctor. It takes almost 25 years to pay off one's home. Public transport is more like packing sardines today. 20 years ago it was comfortable.

Malaysia today is a very good place. Even with the UMNO corruption their housing and healthcare are much better than us here. There the garment cheat people indirectly by stealing from state coffers. Here the garment cheat you directly by increasing housing price and almost every important amenity.

There are only a few things that they need to do in Malaysia but in Singapore it is almost a hopeless case unless the PAP is kicked out of power.

The new Malays are different from the old generation and the Chinese in Malaysia are very entrepreneurial. They have a lot of land and a lot of possibilities ahead for them. The people are living comfortably unlike Singaporeans.

no doubt on paper, Mudland has got greater potential - however, if i would rather pick Indon than Mudland than having the greater potential. Indon is already the largest economy in SEA. and their growth potential is just endless, rich in minerals & resources and cheaper labour than Mudland. Plenty of land, plenty of workers willing to work at cheap rates.

The only thing holding them back, as we all know is corruption. Both countries face problems of crime and inefficiency in the government that has gone back ages. We thrived because of their inefficiencies.

Once Indon decide to wake up and clean up their act, Singapore will be overwhelmed. But how long it will take? 20- 30 years? The funny thing about Indon is that, things will start improving for a while and something will happen to kick it back again...like climbing a slippery wall like that.

Mudland on the other hand, i think, has to sort out crime and corruption before I will want to stay there...yah, land is cheap but if I am faced with cowboy town environment, i think its not a fair value trade. Moreover, their policy of favoring certain races is to me, unfair. Indon i think has the same policy.

I am not being racist but i believe everyone shld be given same chances...

dont play play, muttland appeals to the shieks from middle east, and they have more than just religion in common. sinkieland on the other hand is good at drawing in shreks.

The crime rate is Malaysia is overplayed by our media here. Once UMNO is removed from power, corruption will be reduced drastically.

Singapore is so small and that is why it is so easy for us to become first world country. But as studies have shown, a large percentage of our GDP actually goes towards FTs. In truth, the majority of Singaporeans have it worse than their Malaysian counterparts in terms of standard of living and happiness.

The only way to rectify our problems is to remove the problems and that is the PAP. We need to send back a large number of FTs once their MOM contract expires. Most of the blue collar workers that are really needed can stay. The large number of mid level white collar workers should be sent back.

Property owners will suffer the most but at least we get our country back and serve those that own multiple properties in right for being greedy. Singapore is too small to allow for multiple ownership of properties. And you must know that most of these people are the lackeys of the PAPies.

unfortunately, corruption cannot be removed just by changing the government. it takes determination and alot of time to eradicate this. Singapore and Hong Kong took so long to do that - and even that, we still hear cases of corruption popping up here and there. those are the reported ones...

corruption is something that is ingrained everywhere - from China to US. It is not possible to wipe it out. There is a price for everyone and everything.

Even if you remove Umno, who is to say the next government won't be as inefficient or as corrupt?

I agree, Singapore given its smaller size, is easier to manage than Malaysia - who is much bigger. but the atrosity of some of the crimes there is startling. Will i risk my life and belongings to stay there? I am talking from point of view of peasant not business man.

Yah, for the moment , Singapore seemed to be flooded by middle-mgr FT which honestly i don't see how they are better than local talents. These are fat dogs who come and have a good life, really depriving the local talent their jobs and pay. These need to be sent back.

Honestly, our opposition is not strong enough yet to take over the government. I am not saying names but if they want to take over the government, they ought to be firstly, united to mount a strong challenge. Like that, the incumbent ministers / MPs will be on their toes to fight for their place. Coming election, get their act together, don't squabble like what happened before and concentrate their firepower on one or two GRCs...start from there.

oh, that means there will be even more half completed buildings being abandoned all over KL.

What is the underlying issue involving corruption other than its immoral act. The answer is that resource will not be used efficiently based on market forces or the best person doesn't get to do the job. So inefficiencies occur.

In SG we have so seen how Ho Ching has been elevated to her role at Temasek even without having the qualifications or experience. SHe has lost hundreds of billions which is arguably much more than the corruption in Malaysia all these years.

There are a lot of inefficiencies caused by favoritism in Singapore and the PAPies and their lackeys are behind many of these. How often have you heard of an ex SAF general being put into a ministry or a former minister being placed in a GLC. DO you seriously think they actually do much good in these new surroundings?

Even Japan has recently outlawed such practices because it is obvious that it leads to inefficiencies. The fact is only qualified people should take on jobs.

Legalised corruption is corruption because it leads to the same inefficiencies.

har....depending on where u coming from...

if i give a bribe to the traffic police that stopped me on NS highway for him to forget that I speed, for me, its efficiency !

or if i pay a certain minister to get my son into a top school at your expense....you cry foul and its inefficient...no no...I am not advocating corruption, I am against corruption.

I just want to say, some people find it efficient to bribe...supply and demand...of course i am talking about peasants on the ground...of course...this goes up....

Japan incidentally is not corruption free...MPs can pass their position to their sons...such practice is still common....and so very often you hear ministers having to resign because they accepted bribes from big corporations.

"Moreover, their policy of favoring certain races is to me, unfair."

Don't feel hurt just because you are incapable.

Wow, another false charge. Maybe I revealed that you sodomised your donkey-faced mom after blowing your ass-faced father's shrivelled dick.

Of course, such details are ALWAYS inappropriate for any form of revelation.
Don't worry about it as it's for your own good. Like the OA told you yesterday, your days here are numbered so post while you still can.

;)

Very true..their super multimedia corridor is a complete disaster...KL will never be a leading city..tis minister is just a big thinker, corruption and crime is so rampant tat even the elites or the rich are sending their kids oversea to study, live, work and get try to get their PR in tat country.

Jet Li once told a friend actress married to a malaysian base in KL on why he is getting a spore citizenship,he says it so safe tat sometimes when i leave my bungalow,i forgot to close the gate and when i come back nothing is stolen or burglar...the actress reply...here its so different sometimes in the night i cant sleep..i am so afaraid tat burglars might creep into my bungalow during the night.

so many yrs liao, they still revolving around the annuar poke backside case. 10yrs from now, they'll be saying the same thing about making KL a better place.
