SINGAPORE: Ten motorists were arrested for drink-driving in a pre-dawn operation across the island.

The motorists, all men between 24 and 57 years old, had failed breathalyser tests when they were stopped by the Traffic Police.

These tests measure the amount of alcohol in a driver's breath,

The highest test result was 94 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Traffic Police said this is more than twice the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

If convicted, drink-drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least one year.

They will lose their driving licences and will have to retake and pass the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.

First-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000.

Repeat offenders face a fine of up to $30,000 and mandatory jail term of up to three years.

They may also be given six strokes of the cane if they cause death or serious injury. - CNA/ir
