据新华社报道，自2008年汶川地震以来，老人总会将磨刀挣得的收入捐给灾区、残疾儿童及需要帮助的人。至今捐款金额累计已超过18万元。
老人表示，有的困难学生考上大学却没有钱上，太可惜了。“（捐钱）让他上了大学，一个是对国家（培养人才）有利，另外，他自己也就有了出路。”

而说到他自己，吴锦泉老人却说，如今自己年纪大了，不起早不带夜，一个月，好的时候能挣2000多块钱。但自己用不到多少钱，一个月300块就够了。
剩余的钱，老人便存下来留作善款。
