A 70-year-old “ustaz” cheated three men of RM18,000 after convincing them of his ability to “pull money”. One of the men, who wanted only to be known as Amy, 31, admitted that he and his friends were convinced by the old man’s supposed power after he kept quoting Quranic verses.
“We were so persuaded by the ustaz that we gave him RM6,000 each. He also told us that he only wanted us to put whatever money he pulled to good use. This convinced us that he was sincere,” he said. Amy said on the first day, they were called individually into the ustaz’s house and made to swear not to waste the money he “pulled” because this would only bring them bad luck.
“On the third day, we were summoned again by the ustaz to his house. We were stunned to see a huge amount of money wrapped up in cloth. However, we were not allowed to touch or take the money. “The next day, he asked us to send him to a nearby beach because he wanted to carry out a ceremony and told us to fetch him in the evening,” he said.
However, when they returned later, the ustaz had disappeared. Amy said they waited for several days before breaking into the man’s house, only to find that the money had been replaced with old newspaper and some burnt items. To cap it all, the ustaz sent them an SMS, telling them that he was now in Indonesia.
