‘Handsome European’ turns out to be Nigerian con man

DRAWN by the goods looks and sweet words of her Internet friend, a 52-year-old woman from Batu Berendam, Malacca, pumped RM155,343 into his account and waited for a surprise gift that he had promised her.
However, when he pushed his luck too far by asking the woman to put in more money for a purported Customs clearance to get her the present, the woman realised she had been had.
She reported the matter to the police, who made several arrests.
Only then did she find out that the “handsome European” she had fallen in love with over the social media network was just a Nigerian con man, Utusan Malaysia reported.
Malacca Commercial Crime Investigation Department Chief Supt Soh Hock Seng said the victim, who is married and a grandmother, lodged the report on Feb 22 after she realised that she had been conned by her Internet lover whom she thought was a European.
