‘Endhiran’ sarees a blockbuster hit

GEORGE TOWN: Sarees named after the Tamil blockbuster Endhiran (Robot) is a big hit among shoppers thronging Little India here. Many young women are drawn to the sarees worn by the actress in the movie featuring Rajnikanth and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Office colleagues G. Krishnavani, 28, and C. Shri Shanmugavalli, 22, said they were attracted by the design, which came in two types of materials — organza (a thin, plain weave, sheer fabric traditionally made from silk) and georgette (a textile traditionally made from silk, although synthetic fibres such as polyester are also used) — and priced at RM450 and RM500 respectively.

“The sarees have a beautiful crinkled design on the munthanai (top end that hangs over the shoulder) while the remaining parts is covered with sequins and embroidery.

“The sarees also come with matching embroidered material to be used for the saree blouse,” said Krishnavani at Anita Sarees Centre in Market Street here yesterday. Their colleague K. Malani, 31, said she considered the sarees’ prices reasonable owing to the detailed handwork, noting that they hoped to buy one each to be worn to a Deepavali potluck dinner among colleagues.

Anita Sarees proprietor M. P. Alagarsamy said other popular sarees named after Tamil movies (Kollywood) included Singam, Sura, Vettaikaran, Kandasamy, Aathavan, Anantham and Masilamani, priced between RM40 and RM95. “This time around, shoppers are watching their budget but they are willing to spend a little more to get a few good sarees and salwar kameez,” he said.

Cousins V. Prabaavathi, 31, and T. Shanthini, 25, said they were undecided between the Masakali or Machakali salwar kameez, which were the latest arrivals from Mumbai. Umayal Textiles owner G. P. Asok Kumar said he enjoyed brisk sales, especially during the weekends.
