‘Air-con’ conmen on the prowl
SERDANG: A group of at least three men posing as air conditioner servicemen have been stealing valuables from office buildings in the Puchong and Bandar Puteri area. Serdang OCPD Supt Abd Razak Elias said the men would approach the target office during lunch claiming that they had been sent to service the air conditioners.
“The suspects would tell the staff that they must all leave the building for an hour as the gas used during the servicing was poisonous. “Once they have the office to themselves, they would steal valuables, such as laptops and handphones, and pass the stolen goods to their accomplice waiting at the back,” he said. The thieves would then exit through the back and would be long gone before the employees returned to discover the theft.
Supt Abd Razak said three such cases had been reported this month with total losses estimated at RM30,000. “Investigations revealed that the trio are in their 20s, do not wear any uniform and would carry a bag purportedly containing their servicing tools,” he said. He urged the public to be more careful, saying that employees should always check with their bosses and contact the police if they are suspicious.
