You reccommend the book to randomnexus to read and tell him it will fill up some gaps then afterwards say you have not even read the book at all but seen materials from a different source whatever the fuck that means? The last we have heard is that Lee Siew Choh was unable to recall all the stuff and his poor daughter was unable to reference them in time.

Lee Siew Choh was supposed to be on LKY's side and his defecting was regarded as a coup by the lefties then. He was put up as head as he was seen as the least likely to be detained. It turned out now to be a mistake as his historic decision to abandon parliament gave PAP free hand. However, it has turned out good for Singapore's economic progress and that can explain PAP's dominance in the 70s elections. Tough bills like Land Acquisition Act was passed during that time. If BS was in, I wondered if such a bill can be passed.

On Devan, I am inclined to your speculation. He is exactly like LKY - a tough politician and operator with a reputation on working the ground and he was sent on missions like Malaysia to pioneer PAP and later set up as head of the labour movement. No doubt, we all remember Phey Yew Kok was his protege.

Devan must have weighed the costs very carefully and realised that it was not worth it for his family. He actually said openly why he was put up as President and it was for LKY to remove a potential threat when he pushed for new blood to take over the old guard. That is an operator's talk.

Indeed, they all have their part to play. Today, Devan Nair is still remembered for his contributions and as a founding father thanks no doubt to his wise decision not to publish his memoirs.

This book deserved a thread to be commented seriously. It played out the intimate sharings of these lefties from Poh's perspective and importantly it was lefties' version of LKY back in those remarkable days.

There was a funny part in which LKY told Lim Chin Siong that it was a serious business to put Chin Siong's name into PAP's founding as they plotted to start up PAP and he could go to jail for it.

It turned out he did ... :-) but the irony was Chin Siong did not foresee who did it unto him.

They are in their late 70s and 80s, but a group of People's Action Party (PAP) stalwarts and founding members are keeping their comradeship alive in a social club formed more than three decades ago.

The MK Club, founded by old guard minister Ong Pang Boon, his late wife Chan Choy Siong, former senior parliamentary secretary Chan Chee Seng as well as former legislative assemblywoman Hoe Puay Choo and 40 other pioneer activists - mostly from the PAP's former Tanjong Pagar branch - marked its 35th year at the Centre of Activity and Recreation for Elders (Care) in Hong Lim Complex last week.

More than 30 of them attended a lunch celebration at Care's auditorium on March 20, held at the same time as the club's annual general meeting.

PAP has done reconciliation with the left wing folks in the past years. Children of some key figures like Ong Ye Kung, Grace Fu, Janil Puthucheary, Ho Geck Choo are now part of the establishment. It was PAP's way saying "I am sorry somewhat" and we made it up for your children. There are likely many other stuff done for them which will never be told. These children being made to be part of establishment is an ingenious way of PAP to promote its image and I think credit is due to them. Coupled with these folks now getting old, these gatherings were a form of reconciliation.

Also, socialism as an ethos which they fought for, is now discredited in its mechanism to generate economic prosperity and in a way, it blunted what they sought to fight for.

The most remarkable part was to allow the book, Men in White, to be published as a way for some recognition to the left wing. No doubt there was many who "recanted" upon the tough deprivations in prison. It was the best PAP can allow to reach out to them.

Poh Soo Kai and Lim Hock Siew were not agreeable to those acts and I guessed they were imprisoned for a long number of years far more due to their refusal to recant. Hence, this is why Poh Soo Kai wrote the book in his twilight years.

I got the book by Gerard de Cruz something like The Rojak Rebel? Maybe it is time to re-read it as I cannot remember the ramblings inside.

Yes many switched camps from the left side and they were allowed to carry on life here.

Anyway, what happened to the communist countries by now should give many a re-thinking what ideals they held are not workable and could lead to a different path for Singapore.
 
Yes, they reconciled. Yes on the book as well. Process began in early 1980s, facilitated by folks like Toh Chin Chye and Chor Yeok Eng. The venue for their meeting were at the Hokkein restaurant at Amoy St. Different from the MK club. The Barisan men was relatively easier compared to the wives including wives of PAP Chinese MP that did not follow Barisan when the split occurred. They even cold shouldered old man's wife for this for years.

Ong Pang Boon and his late wife Chan Choy Siong who was also an MP and former Parlimentary Sec continue to be highly influential as they are and were the bridge between the Chinese and English educated as well as between the Malaysian and Singaporean born. At the last GE, people were surprised that the PAP sent a 39 yr woman, non scholar, with ordinary credentials to contest an SMC as a newbie. She is Chan Choy Siong's niece - top most pedigree party wise.

It was however not be for the long term detainees and they were the intelligentsia. A sad outcome.

I doubt it was an apology. More like a sweetener for the more stubborn ones to cross over. There were many who have remained stoic in their ideals and died bitter old men.

For the sake of our country's future, their accounts of events need to be archived too.

In my opinion the Pap vanguards, led by the Old man, walked the straight and narrow during the first 2 decades indirectly because the BS gang and its supporters. Competition brings out the best in everyone
