Two men were charged separately in a district court on Tuesday with having commercial sex with minors.

Han Yam Meng, 34, a printer technician, is alleged to have paid $150 to a 17-year-old Vietnamese girl to have sex with her at a Geylang hotel on June 15.

A pre-trial conference is set for Sept 5.

In the other case, computer technician Peter Gerald Chang Liang Chieh, 43, allegedly paid $100 to have sex with a 16-year-old Vietnamese national at a premise in Lorong 28 Geylang, on May 25.

A man was jailed four months for having sex with an underage girl.

Han Yam Meng, 35, had met the 17-year-old Vietnamese girl at a pub in Geylang Road on 14 June last year.

At the time, the girl had been asked to leave the pub by a staff member, who found she was underage after checking her passport.

The girl then went to a nearby coffeeshop where the senior technical engineer, Han, approached her again and asked for her age.

Earlier in the pub, the girl had told Han that she was 19, but when asked again, she said she was 18.

Han then offered her $150 for sex and the two carried out the transaction at Min Wah Hotel.

The duo got arrested while leaving the hotel together.

For having sex with an underage girl, Han could have been fined, or jailed up to 7 years, or a combination of both.

43-year-old man jailed for having sex with minor

SINGAPORE: A 43-year-old man was sentenced to three months' jail on Thursday for having sex with a minor.

Chang Liang Chieh Peter Gerald was convicted of having sex with a Vietnamese girl who was on a social visit pass. The girl cannot be identified as she was 16 years old at the time of the offence.

The two had met in May last year at a restaurant in Joo Chiat.

They were not acquainted but Chang approached the girl and introduced himself.

Both of them had dinner together and exchanged telephone numbers.

During their chat, Chang asked the girl if she provided sexual services to which she affirmed.

Chang then asked the girl her age and she told him that she was 19 years old.

At the first meeting, Chang paid her S$100 even though they did not seal the deal as Chang was tired.

On May 25, they bumped into each other in Joo Chiat again.

Chang tried to confirm the girl's age again and she insisted she was 19.

At this encounter, they went to a lodging house and were later caught in the act.

During mitigation, Chang's lawyer said the victim had misrepresented her age to Chang more than once. It was difficult to ascertain the age of the victim, especially when she claimed her passport was with someone else.

Chang's lawyer urged the district judge to give a custodial sentence of not more than four months.

But the prosecution noted that the accused did not pursue the matter of the age further and just took the victim's word.

The prosecution added that the maximum jail term for having sex with a person under the age of 18 is seven years.

Chang could also have been fined or sentenced to both.

In delivering the sentence, the district judge took into consideration that the accused did ask the victim for her age.

He said such behaviour must be discouraged which is why it deserves a custodial term.

Section 140: (1) Any person who - (...) (i) has carnal connection with any girl below the age of 16 years except by way of marriage (...) - shall be guilty of an offence.

Clients will face charges if prostitutes under age 18

Prostitution is generally allowed in Singapore, but there are some activities that are against the law.

Having paid sex with a girl under the age of 18 is a crime under laws that were tightened in 2008 to combat human trafficking.

In addition, it has long been illegal to pimp sexual services. Patrons who engage prostitutes through vice syndicates could be called up for questioning as witnesses, lawyers said.

Media reports over the weekend said that the police are investigating an online prostitution ring and around 80 of its clients, who include a former school principal.

The principal, said to be 39 years old and married, resigned from the education service unexpectedly in December last year.
