Man jailed 10 weeks for cheating

By Elena Chong

A PART-TIME tutor who cheated a full-time national serviceman of a total of $2,440 was jailed for 10 weeks on Monday.

Augustine Joseph, 35, pleaded guilty to three charges of cheating Mr Liu Hongyou, 21, of $500 three times between May and August last year.

The court heard that he chanced upon Mr Liu's profile on a pornographic website early last year and began chatting with him.

In April last year, he contacted Mr Liu and identified himself as an investigation officer Michael from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.

He told him that there was an ongoing investigation into him for child pornography and soliciting with underage males.

Mr Liu was convinced as Joseph was able to provide details of his friends. He felt intimidated.

Joseph told him that he could stop all investigation if he paid for his services.

Mr Liu was thus cheated into handing over $500 to Joseph at Block 119 Toa Payoh on May 6 last year.

On two other occasions, he transferred $500 each time to his POSB savings account.

Man jailed ten weeks for cheating

SINGAPORE: By posing as an investigating officer, a part-time tutor managed to cheat a young man of his money after accusing him of various offences including child pornography.

35-year-old Augustine Joseph, who posed as an officer from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, also accused Mr Liu Hongyou of soliciting with underage males and breaching his so-called probation.

In all, he cheated the 21-year-old national serviceman of more than S$2,000 between May and August last year.

Joseph was on Monday sentenced to ten weeks' jail after pleading guilty to three of seven charges.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Kalidass Murugaiyan said that Joseph first chanced upon Mr Liu's profile while surfing a pornographic website early last year.

Joseph then started chatting with Mr Liu to obtain more personal details about him.

Armed with these, Joseph called Mr Liu in April 2010, claiming that the national serviceman was under investigation by the authorities.

Joseph also managed to intimidate Mr Liu by providing vivid details about Mr Liu's friends and conversation details.

Joseph told him that he could stop all investigations against Mr Liu if he paid him for his so-called services. Mr Liu agreed and gave him S$500 on 6 May 2010.

APP Kalidass said Mr Liu continued giving money to Joseph until August that year.
