SINGAPORE: Police arrested a 44-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a snatch theft committed near the headquarters of the Singapore Police Force and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On March 28 at about 7pm, a 32-year-old woman was walking along Akyab Road, off Balestier Road, when a man riding a stolen motorcycle suddenly snatched her handbag and sped off.

Officers from Tanglin Police Division arrested him at his home on Monday.

Police said he had stolen the motorcycle.

The motorcycle and the victim's handbag were recovered and the suspect is believed to be involved in other similar cases.

He will be charged on Wednesday with snatch theft and theft of a motor vehicle. If convicted, he can be jailed up to seven years and caned.

Commander of Tanglin Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) of Police Koh Yak Leng, commended his officers for arresting the suspect.

He also advised motorcycle owners to park at well-lit areas, lock their motorcycles before leaving even if for a short while, and to use additional strong locks.
