Toys from China can be dangerous

MADE-in-China toys may be cheap, but not all are safe for children, China Press reported, citing the Consumers Association of Singa_pore, which recently conducted toxilogical tests. Out of 50 toys, 23 failed the tests. The daily reported that 16 of the toys were found to contain higher than permitted levels of phthalates, three had lead exceeding permitted levels and four had a combination of both. In February, 17 pupils who had played with a bean toy suffered food poisoning when they did not wash their hands before having their meals.

This led the association to buy toys randomly and send them to a laboratory for tests, it said. One of the toys was found to have 20 times the permitted level of lead, it said. The association informed retail shops on Tuesday to stop selling the toys and five giant retail shops complied while nine others had yet to respond, it said. Singapore does not have safety standards for toys and does not perform safety tests on toys, it added.
