SINGAPORE: A sales assistant of an art shop has been sentenced to twelve weeks' jail for stealing from her employer.
29-year-old Marsidah Ramsah, who used to work at Lim's Art and Crafts in Parkway Parade shopping mall pleaded guilty to ten counts of theft.
She stole nearly 700 dollars' worth of goods between December 2008 and July last year. They include items such as electric burners, tea canisters and a lamp.
Marsidah was arrested on 18 August last year after she confessed to the store's outlet manager that she had stolen them. She was originally charged with 61 counts of theft but the rest were taken into consideration.
The court heard that she stole an average of one item every three weeks from the shop during the some eight months she was employed there. District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan said that he could have given her a much harsher sentence.
However, he did not do so as all the stolen items have been recovered and Marsidah was a first-time offender. She could have been sentenced to a maximum of seven years' jail and fined.
