Heard this from an NUS prof (who shall remain un-named) that there's been a recent discovery of uranium deposits in Singapore. Anyone with a Geiger counter available to go around Singapore?

Probably deposited around S'pore to cause cancer so that medical tourism can thrive. They just last week say S'pore medical tourism went up whAT?

I think also maybe used to treat NEW WATER lah.

Dear Trout,

Base on what information? Is it a discovery of uranium deposits or uranium based nuclear devices?

The most likely place is the waters off PASIR RIS Beach.

Remember 'they' say this beach is off limits to swimming because the waters are not clean.

Define clean?

It was also around that time that JAPAN says a US nuclear submarine is leaking nuclear fuel in Okinawa. That same leaking submarine had visited the US naval base at CHANGI.

So you put 1+1 together and its not easy to be wrong,

I would say if really have deposits of uranium, it would be nuclear waste in waters off our beaches.

So SWIM IN S"PORE beaches at your own risks. You never know what the tide would bring.

US Nuclear Sub Leaks in Singapore and Malaysia

Updated on:Monday, Aug 11, 2008

The USS Houston, a nuclear-powered submarine has been leaking for two years, both in its home port in Guam and Pearl harbour and during trips to ASEAN, including to Singapore and Malaysia.
On 7 Aug, the Singapore Ministry of Defence (Mindef) was informed by the United States Navy. The USS Houston visited Singapore’s Changi Naval base from Sep 22 to 26 in 2006.
In a media statement, Mindef said an environment monitoring system has been in place at the naval base since 2003, and the radioactivity readings during the submarine’s stay had registered “within the safety limits”.
The US Navy has been notifying various countries where the submarine has docked about the radiation leak that began in June two years ago.
Last week, it had notified Japan that small amounts may have leaked during three visits this March and April to the southern Japanese ports of Sasebo and Okinawa. Additionally reports say the vessel also visited Malaysia’s Port Klang.
However, the US Navy says that the amount has caused no threat to humans or the environment.

An American nuclear-powered submarine leaked radiation for more than two years, releasing the bulk of the material in its home port of Guam and at Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor, land-locked harbor, on the southern coast of Oahu island, Hawaii, W of Honolulu; one of the largest and best natural harbors in the E Pacific Ocean. said the Houston is still in Hawaii being repaired and the reactor is turned off. Once the leak was discovered last month, the Navy provided detailed data to the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) is a research and development facility dedicated to the support of the US Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program — a joint program of the United States Navy and United States Department of Energy, responsible for the research, design, — a government facility — to determine exactly how much radiation had leaked over the two year time period, Davis said.

The amount is so small, he said, that the Navy terms it a "weepage" rather than a leak. The problem was discovered on July 17, when about a gallon of water spilled onto a crew member when a fitting came loose. The water had previously come in contact with the reactor, but no radioactivity was detected on the sailor.

The radiation leak has caused a stir in Japan where the continued presence of the U.S. military and its nuclear vessels draw complaints from residents about crime, noise and pollution linked to some 50,000 American servicemen based in the country. The presence of nuclear submarines is particularly sensitive, given that Japan is the only country the U.S. ever used atomic bombs against in the closing days of World War II.

"If we add all radiation leaked at every Japanese port, it would be still smaller than the amount of naturally occurring radioactivity found inside home smoke detectors," the Japanese foreign ministry said in a statement accompanying its release of the U.S. report. "Japan also has found no abnormality in its monitoring results during Houston's port calls since June 2006."

News of the incident also comes just weeks ahead of the arrival of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington Four ships of the United States Navy have been named USS George Washington in honor of an early American General and first President of the United States.

The George Washington's arrival, originally set for August under a Japan-U.S. security alliance, was delayed until late September because of a fire aboard the vessel in May, another incident that has caused safety concerns in Japan.

According to the Navy's chronology, the Houston released 8 micro curies in its home port of Guam and .4 micro curies in Pearl Harbor. In addition to the leaks in Japan — a total of .605 micro curies at the three ports — , the ship also released small amounts of radiation during port visits in Singapore, Port Kelang, Malaysia; and Saipan.

Certainly 100%!

With the US Navy Sub leaking radio-active waters in our sea all over, and the PUB's desalination plant pumping sea water out to supply Singaporeans on daily basis.. Eventually we will be also peeing radio-active urine. There for uranium deposits in Singapore island-wide.

Last week, Navy officials told Japan that the USS Houston, a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine, had made one port call -- in March -- while leaking the contaminated fluid.

But after reviewing records of the sub, the Navy told Japanese officials Thursday that the Houston had been leaking much longer, since June 2006, and had made port calls to Japanese bases at Sasebo, Yokosuka and Okinawa before the leak was discovered.

Officials also have told the governments of Malaysia and Singapore that the sub made port calls to those countries while leaking the radioactive water, Navy officials said. The Houston also made stops in Guam and Hawaii. See a map of the submarine's travels »

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) was informed by the United States Navy (USN) today that the USS HOUSTON, a nuclear-powered submarine, had been leaking trace amounts of radioactive water since Jun 06.

MINDEF confirms that the USS HOUSTON made a port call at Changi Naval Base (CNB) from 22 to 26 Sep 06. During the port call, the radioactivity readings registered by the Integrated Environment Monitoring System (IEMS) in CNB were within the safety limits set by the Centre for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science-National Environment Agency (CRPNS-NEA).

The radioactivity level in CNB is jointly monitored by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and CRPNS-NEA. The IEMS, which has been in place at CNB since 2003, is a continuous real-time radioactivity monitoring system that monitors radioactivity in both the air and water.

I know an increasing number of people getting /dying of cancer. If Spore was such a healthy place would such a thing happen

We have no say to what we are exposed to in Spore & the authorities are certainly not going to tell you. I just hope I can stay healthy until its time to leave Spore

Firstly this is an old report more than ONE year ago.

Secondly, the tide would have moved any "radio-active" seawater out into the South China sea or into Malaysian waters.

Thirdly, the seawater meant for destillation was drawn from seawater around Tuas and Jurong island.. . . . . very far away from Pasir Ris Beach and Changi Naval Base. The water was meant for industrial use and not for domestic purpose.

Hope you think twice next time before putting up a report that would make you look like an ignorant idiot.

You may say that from Penang to Kuching is very far, but in Red Dot no where is TOO FAR.:wink:

There is no distillation at all. There is on desalination which is far from distillation. AND THE WATER IS OUR DOMESTIC DRINKING WATER!

You are a typical NAIVE Singaporean, I am sad to tell you. :(

That is a 66.6% idiot or PORLUMPAR.

Once radioactive material comes in contact with sand or m&d, it stays there for years on. Think Chernobyl Nuclear plant leak in Russia.

I would even be MORE WORRIED since that PORLUMPAR IDIOT said the tides would carry them away........"to Sentosa....to bedok jetty.....to east Coast Park?"

That is a 66.6% idiot or PORLUMPAR.

I'm surprise & disappointed that some Sporeans are ignorant on the dangers of radiation.

When someone in Indonesia burns a tree we get the haze in Spore. When the wind changes direction Sporeans can forget about the problem. Haze might be gone but the damage is already done to our lungs & health.

However radiation contamination is much worse. It has a half life of thousands of years. If humans are exposed to it you can get mutations, all sorts of diseases from damaged cells.

66.6% are stupid. The STUPIDEST (and the most EVIL) are the PORLUMPARS. Whilst their masters are earning millions they are happy with just the sight of their masters' Lumpars.

Just draw a imaginary route from Changi naval base to Port Dickson in Malaysia.

That submarine will have to pass through Bedok jetty, The whole of East Coast Parkway beach, pass through Sentosa and Sentosa Cove, Southern islands, West Coast Beach, Jurong Island, Tuas, and off into Malacca Straits.

Not to forget sailing in from Japan and docking at Changi Naval base, Changi beach, pasir Ris beach, and god knows where else
.

So how many potential CONTAMINATED areas In S'pore? Are our live sea food reared in S'pore waters safe to eat?
