An Aussie suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
This is what he gets ...

His GP put him on NDSS membership, a govt program where he get free or highly subsidised blood test strips, needles etc. (Eg For a usual $35 box of strips, a typical member will pay $7, unemployed pay 60 cents, pensioners and safety net members FREE)

Visiting bulk-billed GPs are free, otherwise, the out-of-pocket charges get counted towards the Safety Net. Upon reaching the Safety Net threhold, all out-of-pocket charges will be footed by the Medicare.

NDSS put him on a state Diabetes Society where he attend free courses that teach him :-

Use of blood monitors
Types of Medication
Eating habits
Work/Life balance
Shopping
Foot care
Risk and Self management
...etc

These courses are taught by qualified nurses, diabetes educators and dietitians.

The GP also put him on an Enhanced Care Plan (ECP) where the govt further subsidise specialist treatment (max 5 per year) and put him on a Safety Net. The GP will be paid 100 over dollars from the Medicare for this service. Free for patients.

This will limit the gap amount he need to pay from his pocket to about $1500 a year.

Gap amount is what the doctor charge minus the 5 govt rebates.

The Enhanced Care Plan may include the following specialists

Audiologist
Chiropractor
Diabetes Educator
Dietitian
Exercise Physiologist
Mental Health Worker
Occupational Therapist
Osteopath
Physiotherapist
Podiatrist
Psychologist

Take note that Optometrist,Pathology (blood tests), etc are already paid by Medicare even without an ECP.

All diabetic Aussies are entitled to this services

Joshie Boy!!!! how's it hanging?

Mine's going a little to the left these days

The buddy over in Mt Lawley and I had an interesting talk last week on Health Care

You see Joshie Boy half of the folks over here dont want Canadian or Ozzie style healthcare. The republicans have all these scary ads out on TV. The TV ads show long waiting lines and fold dying cause there's just not enough resources on government run health care. and even my primary care doc tells me the changes might make things worse for me. I dunno. I want cheaper health care but I dont want to give up the red carpet treatment I get over here.

But then again I only get the awesome care cause I work. Once I stop working I can say goodbye to my super superior benefits in my medical PPO dental PPO and my Visioncare.

But then again Mr Mt Lawley tells me he refuses to wait hours at his doctors office in Perth. He told me there are ways around stuff like that.

Well now we are evenly spilt 50-50 on how to go from here. do we want government run health care or not?

seems like a good debate!

The republicans hate not have having a voice (everything seem to against them) and they dislike 'big' govt.
They are convinced that US Medicare is not a govt agency. :-D At the same time, they do not want immigrants to get their hands on free public healthcare. ouch!

No one will have the guts to fund this program.

Nothing to debate about. The inertia US congress is for corporates, not taxpayers. What else can I say.

Waiting for GPs is common in Perth, so book an appointment before hand.

If you have a pressing medical question, the answer is a phonecall away. There is a free hotline to call where you will be attended to by a health professional within minutes. healthdirect Australia 1800 022 222 Singaporeans do not enjoy this type of service in Singapore so they may not be aware that this service exist in the more advanced countries.
The max 4-hour waiting rule set for public hospitals do not apply to GPs in private practice.

Additional points
The hotline is 24-hour. Free from landlines. Usual mobile charges apply.

Examples of how healthdirect can help

  • Are your symptoms serious or nothing to worry about?
  • Your baby won't stop crying - what can be wrong?
  • You're away from home and you need to find a doctor.
  • You need to know more about managing diabetes, asthma or another health condition.

For New Zealanders, your Healthline Telephone Triage Hotline is 0800 611 116 (free 24-hour health advice)

No debate Joshie?

Obamacare sounds alot like Australia Care

So how come so many are against it here? Why so many people are afraid to have universal health care?

The jury is still out. Yes the corporates are scared but then again millions of us are being told by our docs what the changes mean for us. And it aint pretty.

Under my private PPO I think I am better off than any Canada or Australian style health system. If I am sick my health co sends a nurse out to check on us. They will also send someone to drive our kid to school and hell they even send a pet walker out to walk the dog, and pay all our bills (electricity, mortgage, cable TV, phone etc etc) during our sick time should our time out of work exceed one month.

Of course they also drive us to our primary care doc office plus specialist office(s) too. Unlimited doc visits and tests done too. I can get $100K surgeries done and my max cost to me is US$ 100 for hospitalization. My company covers the 5% max out of pocket expenses.

You should see my dental PPO. Simply awesome. I am not sure if my dentist loves us or our PPO plan. Same for VisionCare. A $1000 pair of high index progessive transitions cost only $150. Can I get this under Obamacare or in Canada?

So when my doc tells me I'll lose alot of benefits I understand the debate.

But if Australia and our healthcare systems are far from perfect I wonder what a good western health care system looks like?

come one Joshie boy lets have some good reasons for us to implement Australian style health care over here.

I do realise that. This topic is strictly about public healthcare, as well as the lack of it for the working age group in the USA.

The trollers have always been active when Australia is the topic. Keep them on their toes.

Probably the most comprehensive public health care in the world is in Japan.
Japan health care system covers everything from birth till death. Everything, from consultation fee to an MRI scan is regulated by the government. If you want to look what a "socialised" health care system is, this is the one. Its not perfect, practitioner complaining about not earning enough, aging population means higher burden on the system etc. But at the same time it provides for everyone.

how very dissapointing Joshie Boy

Here you are talking about Obamacare and no wonder many of us are scared

Why should be downgrade to what you have?

Maybe we dont want canadian or Ozzie style health care over here cause its just not good enough

Its looking more likely government should not be involved in running health care

I notice you have nothing constructive to say if health care should be in the hands or private entities or the government

Your silence is deafening Joshie Boy

oh and I just loooove to rub it in but you have screwed this neddy big time by comparing aussie govt health care to private care

all sinkees know the difference between SGH and Mount E so you have just told everyone going to australia the healthcare is basically SGH but in America the Health Care System there is like Mount E

Just another reason to avoid Australia at all costs!

Ha a good analagy I guess

Comparing Australian Government Run Health Care to Obamacare and Singapore General Hospital is a wake up call to people wishing to have substandard service.

Its medical care but its not nearly as good as Private Hospital as in your Mount E example

If we value our lives then there should be no room for substandard medical care such as in the government run healthcare programs. I feel like I have the best with my private specialists provided to me at very low cost and as often as I like whenever I like.

I am thinking government REALLY has no business being in health care.

LIfe is precious after all and maybe the Republicans have a point. The government just cant do as good a job as the private sector.

So that makes you(Redbull313) and Aussie Pricks clones then. Interesting you assume me and neddy are clones and insinuate that is a bad thing yet you are practicing the same here. I only posted something about the Japanese health care system in here and have nothing to say about the rest. Perhaps it is you that should stop this rant instead.
