China is offering over a million dollars for a foreigner to run the world’s largest telescope, so why is nobody applying?



Fast, the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, is looking for a chief scientist from overseas to oversee the daily operation of the 1.2-billion yuan (US$178 million) facility. Over the last few months, it encountered unexpected difficulties in finding a qualified, willing candidate as the job faces many challenges, according to people involved in the hiring process.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences, which owns the telescope, looked overseas for an operator-in-chief because no astronomer at home had the experience of running a facility of a similar scale and complexity.

Several scientists working at the Fast facility declined to comment due to the sensitivity of the issue. One of them said the decision to hire from overseas was made at the top and commenting on it could lead to political trouble.

Chinese FT policy really work like this:

It is a ploy to plunder talents from the west, although they have tons of good scientists and already got excellent results in space and many high tech domains. They know that many top world scientists are eying eagerly to get their hands on world's top and most expensive faculties only exclusively affordable by Chinese budgets, they want to use these to lure the top western scientists to LEAVE THE WEST, so that the West LOST THEM FOR GOOD! It is not really that the Chinese lack them but the important ploy is TO GUT THE WESTERN POWERS of important talents and then they will sink faster. When they submitted resumes and migrated to China, Chinese will just shaft them into empty high title posts which are actually nothing within their huge complicated infrastructure. They WON"T BE really in charge of these Strategically Key Facilities that are Globally exclusive only to China.

World top facilities used as bait to gut opponents' talent pool. To destroy opponents. Basically.

Very soon we will see Bigger and more Advanced Chinese Space-Stations and Space Telescopes. Every aspect overpowering the west.

This NOT only that they have money but quality talents and very successfully Managed, 20X better management than SG.

More to it than meets the eye. Everyone knows that if you can build a telescope of that complexity, you can run it.

It's a political tussle between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (with the backing of Beijing) on the one hand, and the astronomers. The CAS wants to get a foreigner not because a local can't do the job, but to leverage on the foreigner for more technology transfer and industrial espionage. The astronomers know they're capable of taking on – and want – the top post, but are having to concede to Beijing for fear of being blackballed.

Interesting to see how this will pan out. If there are no foreign takers, the astronomers will have won the battle.

Chinese already exceeded the Ang Moh in many areas. Supercomputer, Quantum Computer, Quantum Communication Satellites, Nuclear Power Plants, Mining Combustible Ice, etc etc, Chinese space centers and rocket launching center, are newest largest most advance and they are quickly building one after another, no body could catch up.

Surely they know what they are doing, and know better than the rest. Their competitors are fearful and despaired. Idiotic people like the TS can not handle this reality, looking desperately for ways to console own soul, such as finding a childish ignorant angle to interpret recruitment purpose.

Now a days attacking Chinese seems to be mostly baseless and jealousy driven. They are doing too well while others suck thumbs in jealousy.
