Yes, the same thing happened to Tang Liang Hong. Tang was a former cadre member of the PAP who went over to Wp. One of his gripes was the influence of new church members in senior public services and politics. TCB also cadre members. Notice both have been smeared as racists. The irony was Tang took refuge with a Malay family in JB who were close to him.

There is no way that this Govt will allow a repeat of the embarrassing 35% for the EP or the post going to someone they are not comfortable with. This despite removing much of the powers originally given to th EP.
They could have addressed this very simply by reverting to the previous model of appointing a Head of State. Nobody would have batted an eye. After all it is mainly ceremonial with some residual powers. And it worked well with races rotated and served a useful purpose of symbolic inclusion.
Even then with the lastest revision, if the President does not consent, the new mechanism has been introduced that he does.
The only reason that they did this was protect the legacy of the old who conceived the whole notion of an EP. Nobody wants to say he screwed royally. The notion that he created the EP to move into the role has never ever gone away.

Their neutrality has been in question since Day 1. You don't need an official membership to be utterly loyal to the PAP. The longevity of the ruling party will outlast your career lifespan as a civil servant or that of a self-employed towkay, lawyer or some head of a government stat board. You think the late keling ah gong needs an official membership to make the correct presidential decisions?
Yes. You can do that...just the other day saw a betting slip marked with 3 numbers.
The fourth number on the last row is left blank as all the numbers are rolled.
