United Airlines flight #UA170 preparing to take off from New York to Venice suffered fuel leak at Newark.

A passenger in a window seat on the Boeing 767 (reg. N677UA) at Newark airport saw fuel pouring from a left wing tank while the jet was taxiing to the runway

United Airlines flight 170 had left the gate at 7.12pm for the 4,146-mile flight to Venice. The flight was cancelled, and passengers and their baggage were offloaded.

She said she showed the footage to the pilots. “They just looked at the video and they all kind of looked at each other, like, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this’,” she said.

A spokesman for the airline told the New York Post the flight “returned to the gate due to a fuel leak, and was later cancelled”.

Passengers who were booked on the incoming flight (#UA169) from Venice to New York are entitled to €600 in compensation, but those on the flight with the fuel leak have no statutory right to recompense.

Captain turn on the no smoking sign as usual, but failed to notice that the fuel level meter is dropping so rapidly!

No cockpit alarm for this?

Flying with United Airlines became even less attractive this week after a concerned passenger posted a video online showing fuel gushing from the wing of a jet ready to take off from Newark airport, as the flight crew dismissed the spill as “normal.”

“Sit down, it’s normal,” a flight attendant yelled at Rachel Brumfield after her husband Mike alerted the crew to the deluge pouring from Flight 170’s wing, which is shown in the video Brumfield uploaded.

Shortly afterwards, firetrucks showed up to investigate, according to Brumfield, who was on the flight to take off with her husband for their honeymoon in Italy. “I will never fly United again,” she told the NY Post, adding “every person there was awful.”

Brumfield claimed United Airlines quickly changed their tune when they realized the seriousness of the situation and invited the couple into the cockpit for a glass of champagne, where they were asked to “go easy” on the airline on social media.

In a statement to the NY Post, United described the incident as a “fuel leak” that led to the flight’s cancellation.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. Our team helped provide customers with hotel accommodations for the night and are working to get them back on their way to Venice today,” the airline said.

The Brumfields managed to arrange an alternative flight with Delta from JFK. A fellow passenger was kind enough to arrange a limousine for them, they told the NY Post.

United Airlines is currently battling to preserve its already tarnished reputation, after a number of events blackened its name in recent months. In April, a video of a passenger being forcibly removed from a flight led to a wave of criticism slamming the airline for its policies.

Passenger dragged off overbooked United flight

United says passenger 'involuntarily' removed to make room for crew
Security officer on leave pending investigation of incident

(CNN)A man's refusal to give up his seat on an overbooked United Airlines flight led to a disturbing scene Sunday that has travelers up in arms over airline policies.
The Department of Transportation said it will review the incident, in which a passenger was forcibly removed from the Louisville, Kentucky-bound United flight 3411 at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

The incident has prompted one security officer's suspension and created a publicity nightmare for United.
Several passengers recorded the incident on their phones and posted video on social media showing three Chicago Department of Aviation security officers dragging the man, who has not been identified, down the aisle by the arms and legs while other passengers shout in protest. He continued to resist after he was removed and ran back onto the airplane, face bloodied from the encounter.
"It was very traumatic," passenger Jade Kelley said. She did not witness the entire event but she said the sound of the screams still haunt her.
"It was horrible. I had trouble sleeping last night and hearing the video again gives me chills."
An 'involuntary de-boarding situation'
The incident sparked criticism of a system that allows airlines to involuntarily boot passengers from flights. United was acting within their rights and following policy. Then, the situation turned physical.
United asked passengers to give up their seats voluntarily for compensation. Four crew members needed to get on the flight in order to work another one in Louisville or else that flight would be canceled, airline spokeswoman Maddie King said.

When no one volunteered, the airline was forced into an "involuntary de-boarding situation," airline spokesman Charlie Hobart said.
United weighs a number of factors to determine which passengers would leave the flight, such as connecting flights and how long the delay will leave the customer at an airport, Hobart said.
United employees explained the situation to the man several times, Hobart said. When he refused they followed Department of Transportation protocol and called local law enforcement to forcibly remove him from the plane.
