Having spent his formative years overseas, 20-year-old Kyle Brendan Coughlan initially experienced culture shock when he enlisted in the Singapore Armed Forces.
However, he was able to quickly find his footing - and excel.
Yesterday evening, he was one of 21 graduates to receive the Distinguished Honour Graduate award, the highest achievement given at the 31st Specialist Cadet Graduation Parade held at Pasir Laba Camp.

The reviewing officer for the parade was Minister of State Sam Tan.


Third sergeant Coughlan was one of 1,200 Specialist Cadets on parade, comprising 1,076 from the Singapore Army, 55 from the Republic of Singapore Navy and 69 from the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
The parade marks the completion of the cadets' 22-week combat and leadership course and their graduation as SAF Specialists, receiving the rank of 3SG.



3SG Coughlan made a conscious choice to do his national service. Born to an Irish father and a Singaporean mother, he held citizenships in both countries. Although born in Singapore, he moved soon after and had lived in several countries. Between the ages of 15 and 18, he studied in Singapore at United World College of South-east Asia. At 18, he decided to drop his Irish passport.

"I knew that all my friends would be going overseas to study after graduating and if I chose the Singapore citizenship, I would have to stay and do NS. I always knew I was going to choose Singapore, I'm close to family here and I've made really good friends in the army."
In his speech, Mr Tan emphasised the need for a strong defence force in the light of recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and Jakarta. "NS has been the cornerstone of our defence, securing our peace and stability."

He did not have to give up his Irish PP at age 18. ICA will send notice at 21 to make the call. He could have given up his Singapore PP and hold on to Irish PP and he would have access to all of EU including benefits. He of course is free to enter Singapore at will and work here as he pleases with an employment pass. The privileges are identical to citizens, only when got kids, have to pay the token increase in fee. Poor advice given to him.

he could have chosen to be an ft and came back and enjoy all the dignity and none of the priviledges,instead he chose to give up his irish passport and become a slave.his mother must have lied to him under oath,18 year old old enough to smoke,gamble casino and fuck but still too stupid to make correct life decisions.

My BMT has a eygptian chinese boy who grew up in eygpt and only spoke english,he came to Singapore alone to serve NS,at least he came back for a good reason.He had a bungalow and a few other properties under his name and Singapore citizenship that his dad bought in the 90s.

Giving up his Irish passport now does not mean that he can't get it back later - all he needs to prove is that his grandparents are Irish (nationality by descent) - so if he has singkies buyers regret later on in life he's only given up a couple of years of his life (foolishly for NS). That is a reason why there has been a dramatic spike in Irish passport applications post-Brexit.

It is the same in the UK - your parents don't matter if you are making a claim, it shall be your grandparents that determine your right to claim.

Seriously it's not like we see everyone in Singapore dying to get another citizenship. So having just Singapore citizenship must be pretty good. Which is what this Irish bloke chose.

the only problem is we do not know the full details of this sordid little affair.already we know hes been bribed with various awards and a 3sg rank with honors of the highest distinction award,clearly the road is paved for the way of a scholarly life,soon he will be receiving a scholarship to a distinguished university.even our sammyboy "best recruit" 1983 PAPsmearer who knows everything about the military did not get jackshit except a Swatch watch and John Little vouchers which sadly closed down last year.His mom and dad probably got state job offers too.

culture shock my ass......the biggest "culture shock" he received was when he was back home in ireland when he was a kid and he saw a ad on tv for kung fu panda and panda express spring rolls "2 for 5" ten years ago and he realised he was a goddam chink.

thus began the lifelong journey and sacred mission to find his true "beginnings" and thus he ended up in Singapore for some goddam reason yet unknown,should have stayed at home and not waste his time and ordered chinese takeout instead.
