The inaugural Singapore/Malaysia edition of reality singing show The Voice has drawn flak online with its Mandarin-speaking requirement.

In response, a spokesman for mm2 Entertainment, which is co-producing the show with StarHub and Astro, tells The Straits Times that it "decided to acquire the format licence in Mandarin based on the assessment that it is most commercially viable".

The company had announced in October last year that it had acquired the rights to produce the Singapore/Malaysia version of The Voice in Mandarin.

Last Friday, the company started online auditions for the show.

Its official marketing material, including its website and Facebook page, state that while the contest is open to singers of all nationalities and races, participants have to be "fluent in Mandarin and are able to perform Mandarin songs".

The show will be aired on StarHub's Hub E City in Singapore and Astro AEC in Malaysia, both of which air programmes mostly in Mandarin.

The mm2 spokesman adds that the contestants would have to converse with the judges, who have not been revealed, mainly in Mandarin.

"The ability of the contestants to communicate effectively in Mandarin becomes a necessity for the execution of the production as contestants are required to engage the judges extensively, including during the coaching sessions, which are integral to the show format."

Social media has been abuzz with commenters who argue that the requirements leave out many aspiring singers who are not fluent in Mandarin.

Mr Graham Perkins, chairman of non-profit music organisation The Music Society, Singapore, finds the language requirements prohibitive.

"A great voice can sing in any language and should still be recognised," he says. "It seems the production company has implemented a restrictive requirement mainly for commercial, and possibly legal, reasons, in that songs cleared for use will be in Mandarin."

The Voice has been held in various languages in different versions around the world since its inception in 2010.

The original version, The Voice Of Holland, is in Dutch.

The popular American version of the show, now into its 12th season, features a star-studded line-up of judges/mentors including pop stars such as Adam Levine and Alicia Keys, while the British version has counterparts such as will.i.am and Jennifer Hudson.

Singapore Idol, the local version of another popular singing franchise, American Idol, was broadcast in English here.

In recent years, several Singapore singers have had success with regional Mandarin singing shows, most notably Nathan Hartono. The 25-year-old came in second in Sing! China last year, a reality show which was formerly China's edition of The Voice.

So what in Chinese if the programme is meant to be broadcasted to Chinese speaking audiences.

If the requirement is in English, will the m&ds even squeak?

A lot of noise over nothing...when m&ds are stoopig and incapable of learning & speaking other peoples' languages.

Yet so many Chinese are able to learn and even ace examinations in m&d...every unfortunately, even if A Chinese got straight seven A1s in a examination in m&d language, yet he/she is not able to be guaranteed a place in the local university....shows the inferiority complex of all m&ds at work.....like that how to progress?

...better go balik kampong....but guess the greed of free money out of corruption is just too strong to resist...madhater pm, corrupted regime for over 30 years, Mongol bomb body case, ah wah sodomy charges, 1MDB, MH 370, ...no end to manifestations of m&d incompetences.....

actually when i go to poker games over the past few years, when it comes to languages chinks are the worse, even their spoken english is on average the worst compared to malays and indians, full of singlish, broken english, terrible grammar and bad pronounciations.....its like chink brains are not build for languages,u know since their native language is made up of tonal languages or some shit.

when it comes to linguistics and multilingualism,i find indians are the best followed by malay, the malay are quick to catch on and understand basic mandarin and can even speak a few words here or there, while the SG indians are the best, some of them can speak entire sentences in mandarin and even hold conversations, they can speak lightning fast......i have yet to see a single sinkie chink that could speak a lick of malay or tamil.either they force everyone to speak mandarin or their terrible english.

just look at the fts in this country for example, which races are the best at integrating and adapting and which are the worst........i can tell u no one goes near the chao ah tiongs and their chao ni ma de bi,thats all they can speak, and they need a place to congregate or they will be lonely......ever hear a chink trying to speak english or foreign language even after spending many years in a foreign country?u would die laughing, and yet they mistook their isolation and cultural inadaptibility as a form of superiority.

sigh i sympathise with the malays and indos so much, imagine having to deal with a bunch of freaks wackos with mongoloid looking faces in ur country that have a difficult time assimilating with foreign culture.Chinatown here chinatown there.

Tens of thousands of Indians and Malays received their Primary school education in Mandarin in Malaysia.

Their parents prefer these kids to go through the Chinese schools rather than the government schools which are lower in standards and discipline.

Never assume that non-Chinese cannot understand you when you speak in Mandarin in Malaysia. The Indian lady that sells videos and CDs at Pelangi/Sentosa next to Ah Piau's WanTon Mee is an example. When i spoke to her in English, she appeared to be blurred. She chose to speak Mandarin to her customers actually........
