Android Circuit: Powerful Galaxy S8 Launched, Samsung's Firey Note 7 Returns, Google Pixel Secrets

Ewan Spence , CONTRIBUTOR
I look at the impact of mobile technology and online media.

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit looks back at the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, the differences between the South Korean handsets, what the S8 says about the future, secrets of the Google Pixel’s camera, the return of the Note 7, a lengthy LG G6 review, HTC’s new user controls, and do we really want smaller bezels?

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

Samsung Launches Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus

As expected, Samsung launched the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus models this week. The flagship devices are two of the highest specification Android phones available on the market. The South Korean company has put the initial focus on the ‘infinity screen’ that runs from edge to edge (and with reduced bezels), Samsung’s portfolio and services, and traditional Galaxy elements such as waterproofing, microSD support, and wireless charging:

“The Samsung Galaxy S8 ushers in a new era of smartphone design and fantastic new services, opening up new ways to experience the world,” said DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “The Galaxy S8 is our testament to regaining your trust by redefining what’s possible in safety and marks a new milestone in Samsung’s smartphone legacy.”

Dieter Hohn takes a closer look at the new handsets on The Verge, starting with the biggest change - the removal of the physical home key.

Extending the screen to near the bottom of the phone means that there’s no room for Samsung’s traditional hardware home button. Instead, it uses software buttons like other Android phones. It also uses some haptic feedback like Apple’s iPhones to create a virtual feeling of pressing a home button, though it only works on the very specific spot where the software home button appears. One neat feature: some Android apps hide those main Android buttons when they go full screen, but you can still firmly press the bottom of the screen to activate the home button.

Getting rid of the physical home button also means that Samsung had to move the fingerprint sensor. It’s on the back now, right next to the camera. That’s not a very convenient place for it, honestly. It’s too high up on the phone to comfortably reach and it’s also right next to the camera module, which might mean you’l be getting fingerprints on the camera more often than you’d like.

The Galaxy S8 Versus The Galaxy S8 Plus

Although the headlines focus on the Galaxy S8, Samsung actually launched two handsets at the event. The Galaxy S8 Plus obviously has a larger screen, but what else is different between the two models? Forbes’ contributor Gordon Kelly finds out what the differences are, including the price:

Samsung hasn’t been shy to increase the price of the Galaxy range in recent years and this is happening again in 2017, which takes both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus above iPhone pricing:

Galaxy S8 - 64GB - $750 / €799 / £689
Galaxy S8 Plus - 64GB - $850 / €899 / £779

Some variation exists (Best Buy lists the phones for $725 and $825 respectively), but the hard fact is these 64GB phones unlocked are now approximately the same price as a 128GB iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. MicroSD works in Samsung’s favour here, but a threshold has been crossed.

Why The Galaxy S8 IS A Guide To The Future

Forbes’ Aaron Tilley looks at three of the features of the Galaxy S8 that define the smartphone challenge in 2017. For me the biggest of these is the digital assistant. Samsung is staking a lot on the power of Bixby in the S8, giving it a significant marketing coverage and a dedicated hardware button on the handset:

Pressing the button activates the assistant to start listening to voice commands. Samsung said users would be able to do everything in voice they could do with touch. A demo showed how users could do simple do simple interactions like rotate an image or set a timer. At the start, only native Samsung apps will work with Bixby, but Samsung is trying to get third-party developers to integrate their apps into Bixby. Bixby can also use the camera to recognize objects in front of it and pull up information. Looking at a wine bottle, for example, connects the user to a Wine seller that presents reviews and pricing for ordering online. Bixby will connect with other online services like Amazon. There's also a personalized home screen with Bixby that supposed to show recommended content, like YouTube videos.

On paper, Bixby sounds fine. But in practice, it may not work out. Samsung will have to overcome a history of mediocrity in developing its own software.

Secrets Of The Google Pixel Camera

Google is proud of the camera software that has lifted the Google Pixel to the top of the charts in terms of critical image reviews. That software grew out of Google Glass, and now the development team has written up its experience of the experimental software that is now widely available.

In 2011, Marc formed the team at X known as Gcam. Their mission was to improve photography on mobile devices by applying computational photography techniques. On their hunt for a solution to some of the challenges presented by Glass, the Gcam team explored a method called image fusion, which takes a rapid sequence of shots and then fuses them to create a single, higher quality image. The technique allowed them to render dimly-lit scenes in greater detail, and mixed lighting scenes with greater clarity. This meant brighter, sharper pictures overall.

Image fusion debuted in Glass in 2013, and it quickly became clear that this technology could be applied to products beyond Glass.

The Note 7 Returns

Alongside the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, consumers will have a chance to get their hands on arguably the best Android smartphone of 2016, as Samsung confirms the Galaxy Note 7 will return. The Note 7 has a fiery reputation following issues with its battery and construction that led to two global recalls last year. Initial availability will be as either a rental or refurbished unit. Ben Schoon Reports:

Samsung will open up sales of the Galaxy Note 7 as a refurbished device or as rental devices “where applicable.” The company has not confirmed any locations where the phone may go on sale in this state, but it’s likely that this would be in emerging markets. Sales in each region will be “dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand.”

More LG G6 Reviews

Myriam Joire and the team at ChipChick have been reviewing LG’s latest smartphone. Not only does the G6 add to Android 7.0 with its UX skin, but the hardware is impressive and befitting of a flagship handset:

we think the G6 is absolutely gorgeous. Finally (and for the first time), LG gives us what we’ve long been asking for: an uncompromised, refined, full metal and glass flagship — a premium design that can take Apple and Samsung head-on. There’s no painted metal here, no modular gimmicks (yes, we’re looking at you, G5). No plastics, even (hello G4). The G6 is made of a machined and chamfered aluminum frame with seamless antenna bands, sandwiched between two sheets of Gorilla Glass. It’s also water and dust resistant (IP68 and MIL-STD-810G rated).

Touching The Sides Is Acceptable

HTC is looking to take a novel approach to controls on the upcoming HTC U flagship. Evan Blass reports on the use of the external frame of the handset not just to house the occasional volume or power button, but as a completely touch sensitive frame. The handset, codenamed Ocean, is expected to be revealed by early May.

The HTC U is powered by the same top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip as North American Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus units, but its standout feature is located in the device’s metal frame, of all places. Seen in the videos above and below — and known as Edge Sense — the frame-embedded sensors enable the user to control numerous, customizable actions with gestures such as squeezing or swiping along its left and right sides.

And Finally…

What if you don’t like thin bezels? As it rapidly turns out to be the fashionable element in every 2017 design, Justin Duino asks if the loss of the null space around the screen is something that the readers of 9to5Google actually want:

Each of these handsets attempts to minimize the amount of bezel around the displays. This technique allows for a larger screen size while keeping the phone’s footprint relatively small. The downside is that you lose valuable screen real estate where your hand can rest while holding the phone.

Are you a fan of the nearly bezel-less designs showing up on flagship phones? Answer the poll below and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Samsung Galaxy S8 fans will miss out on these features

Samsung's Galaxy S8 is finally available to pre-order and there's no doubt that this is the smartphone to beat in 2017.

With an incredible Quad HD+ display that stretches across the entire front of the phone Samsung is pushing the boundaries of smartphone design.

The Galaxy S8 and larger S8+ also include an updated front and rear camera, iris/facial recognition for added security and an invisible home button which is embedded under the giant display.

The devices start from £689 and those who pre-order today will take delivery of the Galaxy S8 on April 20th.

However, before you hit the order button there are a few things UK owners should be aware of.

Firstly it appears that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ sold in Europe won't feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor.

This chip is thought to be one of the fastest ever made, but Samsung looks set to only include this super-speedy processor in the US and Asia.

A recent speed test from Android Police revealed just how powerful the Snapdragon 835 is.

The website has had a chance to test the Qualcomm 835 and the results appear incredibly impressive.

Qualcomm had originally estimated that its new powerhouse would be around 20 per cent faster than it’s previous offering.

But the latest benchmark results have revealed that the GPU performance is nearly 40 per cent better than the 835’s predecessor in some tests.
Stephen Bear appears in series one of TOWIE

If Samsung does end up placing this chip in some of its S8’s it will easily beat all of the current Android competition on the market including Google’s Pixel and LG’s new G6.

Sadly, if the report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is true, UK users look set to get the Exynos 8895 processor which may not have such impressive stats.

Another feature that Brits will miss out on at launch is Samsung's Bixby personal assistant.

Like Apple's Siri, Bixby is an intelligent interface that will help users get more out of their phone.

There's even a new Bixby button which allows users to conveniently access Bixby and navigate through services and apps with simple voice, touch, vision and text commands.

Sadly, Samsung has confirmed that Bixby's voice services won't be ready in the UK until much later in the year with some suggesting it may not even arrive before the winter.

Finally, the S8 launched earlier this week in three exciting new colours.

These include Midnight Black, Orchid Grey and Arctic Silver.

However, Samsung has confirmed that its Arctic Silver colour won't be available when the phone hits UK stores on April 28th.

The Korean technology firm has said it could potentially launch Arctic Silver in the future but this will be announced in due course.

//d9.sina.com.cn/pfpghc2/201606/23/fb46c92323b448b6bcee0c1ca149c326.jpg

End

End
