A loss is a loss but FAS beautified it and called it a narrow loss.

Needless to say, who are the players?

The Singapore National Team stood toe-to-toe against Afghanistan in extremely windy conditions on Thursday night, but fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat in the friendly match at the Al Sailiya Sports Complex in Qatar.

Afghanistan took an early lead four minutes into the game when a quick free-kick from the left fell kindly to Sharif Mukhammad, who fired home from the edge of the box leaving Singapore custodian Hassan Sunny – who was wrongfooted by the flight of the ball – no chance.

The Lions refused to allow the early setback to affect them as they carved out a couple of glorious chances to draw level after the goal.

A tempting first-time cross from Faris Ramli in the 9th minute almost reached Yasir Hanapi, but the latter was unable to get a strong touch on the ball.

Lions captain Hariss Harun then found Shakir Hamzah on the overlap on the left and Shakir sent a first-time cross into the box for Khairul Amri, but the striker was unable to connect with the ball.

Yasir swung in a dangerous free-kick from the left on 29 minutes, but Afghanistan custodian Ovays Azizi took control of the ball before it reached any of the Singapore players.

The Lions came out firing after the break, though, and deservedly levelled just a minute into the second half through Shawal Anuar, who took down a searching cross from Hariss before sidefooting past Ovays for his first international goal.

However, Singapore’s joy was short-lived as Afghanistan regained the lead on 57 minutes when Mustafa Azadzoy blasted home after being sent through on goal by Kanischka Taher.

In search of an equaliser, Singapore coach V. Sundram Moorthy brought on the in-form Khairul Nizam for Amri three minutes after the hour mark.

The change almost paid dividends on 81 minutes when Nizam jumped the highest to reach Yasir's free-kick, but sent his header narrowly wide.

There was another chance for the Home United striker to equalise for Singapore in stoppage time after he was sent through goal, but Nizam saw his low and hard drive at goal pushed away by Ovays.
