INGAPORE: A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 6 years and 6 months’ jail on two counts of sexual assault and one count of committing an indecent act on his niece, who was five years old at the time.
The abuse came to light last year, when the victim’s sister, who had witnessed the abuse as a young child, confided in the school counsellor, who in turn reported it to the police.
The abuse took place over a period of at least one year and began in June 2006, when the victim and her sister would be in the care of their maternal uncle, who was then unemployed after completing National Service. Their mother and grandmother were often working, and their father did not live with the family.
The accused would sexually assault the victim as her sister was napping after returning home from school. The man would ask his niece to massage his hips, legs and his private parts. The little girl was also forced to perform oral sex on the man, which was witnessed once by her sister.
The victim and her sister told their grandmother about the abuse, only to be scolded for making the allegations. The sisters then decided to “keep it a secret”, thinking that no one else would believe them, the court heard.
Senior Consultant at the Child Guidance Clinic, Dr Parvathy Pathy, who examined the victim after her abuse came to light, reported that the now-14 year old often felt sad, angry and blamed herself for allowing the abuse. She also confided that she had flashbacks of the abuse and now experiences a “phobia of males”.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai sought a sentence of six to eight years' imprisonment, highlighting to the court several aggravating factors.
When Joshua Robinson’s apartment was raided, officers seized 5,902 obscene films, including 321 films of child pornography. The haul is believed to be the largest collection of child pornography seized from an individual in Singapore.
Robinson, 39, pleaded guilty to nine charges: Three for sexually assaulting the girls, five for making and possessing obscene films and one for showing an obscene film to a six-year-old girl. Another 20 charges, including four more for sexual assault, were taken into consideration during sentencing.
Deputy public prosecutor Nicholas Lai sought a jail term of four to five years
9 charges plus 6000 obscene films and 300 child porno films ONLY 4 YEARS
