SINGAPORE - A 51-year-old man stepped on his neighbour's face and hit it with a wooden pole during a fight, a court heard on Tuesday (April 12).

Mohamed Noor Atan was jailed for 15 months after pleading guilty to a charge of causing grievous hurt.

A district court heard that sometime between midnight and 1am on Jan 21, Noor had been drinking beer at home on the 12th floor of Block 79, Indus Road, when he heard someone knocking on his door repeatedly.

He opened it to find his neighbour, Mr Collar Benny, 50, who wanted to talk to him "about their past grievances regarding a woman", the court heard.

The duo started arguing before exchanging punches and Mr Benny fell to the ground after being hit in the face.

While he was lying motionless, Noor stepped on Mr Benny's face three to four times.

Several neighbours then saw Noor take a wooden pole from along the corridor and use it to hit Mr Benny's face and chest about five times.

Noor then dragged Mr Benny along the 12th-floor corridor and downstairs to the 11th floor.

Neighbours called police, and officers arrested Noor at the scene.

Mr Benny was taken to Singapore General Hospital, where he was treated for facial fractures and cuts.

He was given hospital leave from Jan 21 to 24.

For voluntarily causing grievous hurt, Noor could have been jailed for 10 years and fined or caned.
