Orphan to drug dealer

Aussie judges unmoved by sob story of S'porean jailbird

By Mavis Toh

A12-1.jpg

HIS life is the stuff of Channel 8 dramas.

The plot goes like this: He is an orphan adopted by four Singaporean men he calls uncles. They turn out to be drug lords. He becomes involved in the drug trade too.

He tries to escape from his life of crime but is shot in the leg by an uncle. He becomes a wanted man. He goes to jail. He escapes from jail. He is arrested in Australia for smuggling heroin. He is now a model prisoner there.

That is the gist of the story - so far - of Singaporean drug dealer Tan Wee Quay, 38.

Six years ago, he was caught for his role in trying to smuggle 125kg of heroin worth A$165 million (S$194 million) from North Korea into Melbourne. He was jailed 24 years, the maximum sentence. It was the largest heroin seizure in the state of Victoria and one of the largest ever in Australia.

On Friday, kitchen assistant Wang Zhenjun, 44, was jailed four years for fatally stabbing his supervisor Tan Guanhua, 25, at The Soup Spoon eatery last year.
Wang, a Chinese national, pleaded guilty to one charge of manslaughter in the High Court. He could have been jailed for up to 10 years, or for life.
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://www.asiaone.com/static/ads/scripts/adsimu.js"></script>In a curious situation, his own lawyer pleaded for six years, a longer sentence than those imposed in cases cited by prosecutors.
The court heard that Wang worked at another outlet of the restaurant, but every Saturday, he supplemented his income by working at the Raffles City branch.
There was no bad blood between the two men. But on the evening of March 10, Mr Tan walked into the kitchen of the eatery and told Wang to wash the spoons first as there was a shortage in the dining area.
Wang's job was to collect dirty utensils and wash them using a dishwashing machine.
Wang told his supervisor that before he could wash the spoons, he first had to take the utensils out of the dishwasher.
Mr Tan then shouted at him to wash the spoons immediately.
A scuffle broke out after Mr Tan punched Wang in the left cheek.
Five other employees who were in the kitchen rushed forward and separated the two men, who continued shouting at each other.
When Mr Tan tried to get at Wang, the kitchen helper grabbed a knife lying on the dishwasher and stabbed him.
After Mr Tan collapsed, bleeding profusely, Wang declared: 'We China people are not that easy to be bullied.'
Paramedics pronounced Mr Tan dead on the spot.
Wang confessed to police at the scene that he had stabbed Mr Tan and pointed out the weapon, a blood-stained knife with a 20-cm blade.
An autopsy found a single stab wound on the dead man's back.
Wang originally faced the death penalty for murder but the charge was reduced following a psychiatric report that he had a moderate depressive episode.
Wang's assigned lawyer, Mr Alan Moh, on Friday pleaded for leniency, stressing that his client was not responsible for the scuffle.
The lawyer cited manslaughter cases which attracted sentences of eight to nine years. He asked for a 'light sentence' of six years.
On the other hand, Deputy Public Prosecutor Peter Koy cited three similar cases ? of killings during an altercation - in which the offenders were sentenced to between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 years.
This prompted Justice Kan Ting Chiu to remark to Mr Moh: 'This is one of those rare situations. He seems to have cited cases more favourable to your client than you have.'
In passing sentence, Justice Kan took into account that the incident was not premeditated and there was an element of provocation.
'It appears that he was the one who started the altercation and he threw the first punch,' said the judge.
'In the course of that, you inflicted one stab wound on the deceased which unfortunately proved to be fatal.'</td></tr></tbody></table>

Three Vietnamese women arrested for pickpocketing
By Margaret Perry, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 12 July 2009 1606 hrs

Photos of

SINGAPORE: Police arrested three Vietnamese women for stealing from a female shopper at a shopping mall along Victoria Street on Saturday evening.

At about 5pm, officers from Central Police Division were performing routine anti-crime patrols at the mall when they spotted the three suspects, aged between 22 and 39, following closely behind the female shopper. This aroused the suspicion of the officers.

One of the suspects was spotted reaching into the shopper's backpack while shielding her hand with a jacket. The three suspects then hurriedly walked away, but were swiftly apprehended by the officers.

A handphone, belonging to the female shopper, was recovered from the suspects' possession. Another handphone and a portable music player, believed to be stolen items, were also recovered from the suspects.

All three suspects will be charged on Monday and if found guilty of theft, will face a fine and up to three years in jail.

Acting Commander of Central Police Division, Superintendent Lee Ping Yue, reminds members of the public to take care of their personal belongings at all times, especially in crowded places, and to be wary of strangers who follow them too closely.

ON HIS Sunday off on Feb 17 last year, construction worker Cao Ruyin, 40, visited a friend in Geylang. He never made it back to his dormitory in Yew Tee.
While walking to the Kallang MRT station at about 8pm, the friends were set upon by a g ang of robbers.
While 44-year-old Wu Jun managed to flee, Mr Cao was not so lucky.
His friend found him later lying unconscious at an open area near Geylang Drive. He slipped into coma and died in Tan Tock Seng Hospital six days later of head injuries.
General workers Galing Kujat and Jabing Kho, both 25, went on trial in the High Court on Monday for murder.
Three other Sarawakians have been sentenced to jail terms ranging from 3 1/2 years to six years in jail for committing robbery with hurt. They were also caned.
Salesman Ben Lim Hoo Chiang, 27, testified that Vencent Anding, 24, came to his second-hand shop on Feb 24 and offered him a Nokia cell phone.
Mr Lim handed over $200 and Vencent agreed to repay $220 in a week's time to redeem the phone.
A police check on its International Mobile Equipment Identity (Imei) number the next day revealed that it belonged to Mr Cao and Vencent was arrested.
His four accomplices were subsequently nabbed.
Galing and Jabing are not denying robbing Mr Cao but are insisting that his death was accidental.
Wu Jun is to testify on Tuesday.

haaa happened to one of my close friends in the year 2002. He started work at 4am in the morning and its quite dangerous timing to start work during that time. Had to walk to the errie carpark situated a distance away.
This is his daily routine for at least 1000 days consecutively. To protect himself, he carried a penknife to and fro carpark.
One early morning, two brangla tried to ROB him. Instincitively, he swiped the penknife deep into the two blangra's arms and face. Both suffered serious injury and police came.
Friend was ARRESTED for causing serious hurt to two "innocent" blangras even though the police got evidence that branga do not live near that area while my friend is staying upstair.
Blagra denied robbery. Two against one. haaa friend went to jail for a few months and never heard from him anymore. Think retired in mudland.

Pregnant pedestrian almost knocked down by speeding cyclist along footpath‏

ON TUESDAY at Sengkang Square, I saw a cyclist zip past a pregnant woman from behind, narrowly missing her. The oblivious cyclist just continued his journey on the pavement, leaving the pregnant woman in shock after she almost fell.

I have highlighted to the Traffic Police in the past the dangers these cyclists pose and I was assured they would step up patrols in the area, but the problem persists. Every day, between 7am and 9am, and 7pm and 9pm, hordes of cyclists still brush past pedestrians on the pavement
Do we have to wait for a serious accident before we are given protection and it is safe to use the pavement?

Struggling Singaporeans and lucky Kiwis

AS THE parent of a rower from the victorious Singapore junior dragon boat team, I was glowing with pride - and gratified - to read Tuesday's report, 'Dragon boaters roar in Prague'.

For the past year or more, my daughter trained seven days a week and squeezed in additional time and labour between training to scour housing estates, collecting old newspapers and drink cans to help raise money to fund the trip to the Prague meet. She lugged these items from home to school as well. All this in addition to keeping up with her school work. My home was turned into a karung guni depot, stocked with old newspapers and drink cans.

Relatives chipped in by collecting these items and passing them to us during weekend family gatherings.

My neighbours must have thought we had financial problems.
I had to sacrifice my sleep to drive my daughter to training to save travel time and so she could get as much sleep as possible. She missed most weekend family gatherings around the dining table because of training or she was simply too pooped.

She - and we - made these sacrifices with one aim in mind: to send a national team to Prague and do Singapore proud. And it was mission accomplished for the 49-member squad of students who won four gold medals, three silvers and a bronze.

But here is the ironically disappointing postscript: My daughter and the team discovered that the national team from New Zealand which took part in the same championships was sponsored - by Singapore Airlines.

Battered bodies the worst I've seen

SYDNEY: Detective Sergeant Philip Elliott has seen many a dead body after 19 years on the job but the badly battered bodies of two Singaporean students murdered in 2003 in Sydney were the worst he had ever come across.

Mr Tony Tan Poh Chuan's head was 'deformed and extensively damaged', said the veteran crime scene investigator on the stand yesterday.

About the case
TWO Singaporean undergraduates were found brutally murdered in an apartment in suburban Sydney on Sept 15, 2003.
Seven months later, their room-mate, fellow Singaporean student Ram Puneet Tiwary, who shared the apartment with them, was arrested and charged with the double murders.

Tiwary told the police that he had been asleep at that time and woke to find his friends dead.

S'pore to hire foreign dentists

TWO new initiatives are in the works to ease the dentist shortage here by allowing more dentists from the region to work in Singapore.

Together with other recent measures, this can help bring down the dentist to population ratio, from about one dentist for every 3,400 people to one for every 2,200 within the next two decades, said the health ministry's chief dental officer Associate Professor Patrick Tseng.

An agreement is in the works with India to make it easier for the dentists from their top institutions to work here, as long as they pass a series of qualifying exams. Currently, their dentists are not even eligible to sit for these exams.

2 men on murder trial

A CLEANER found an unconscious man bleeding from the head near a bus stop in Sims Avenue last year.

Taken to Changi General Hospital, security guard Loh Ee Hui, 35, died of a fractured skull 16 hours later.

Ellarry Puling, 26, and Fabian Adiu Edwin, 19, both Malaysians, are now on trial for allegedly killing him on Aug 23.

The two men are from Sabah and came here in 2007.

Testifying on Monday, Mr Rahim Ali, 43, told the High Court that he drove up in a lorry at about 4am to empty the litter bin and clean the area at the bus stop.

He called the police when he saw a bleeding Mr Loh lying motionless on the pavement.

Paramedics were the first to arrive and Mr Rahim and his partner left after their cleaning duries.

Among the 38 prosecution witnesses will be police officers who will testify that Ellarry, a cleaner, and Fabian, a factory worker, stole Mr Loh's cell phone and EZ-link card.

Ellarry's defence is that he had no intention to kill Mr Loh while Fabian will tell the court that he only played a minor role in the fatal robbery.
The trial is expected to last for 13 days.

Dexter Rayala Flores, 28, who hasbrown-tinged shoulder-length hair, admitted to five charges of stealing and 15 counts of using his victims' credit and debit cards from April to June. By the time he was nabbed, he had chalked up purchases of about $7,500 worth of jewellery, $850 for a cell phone, and $1,400 of clothes and cosmetics.

Police checks on the footage of closed-circuit television cameras at the stores led to his arrest on June 22. Through his lawyer, Flores told the court that his father, who was a reporter and activist, had been shot dead by a right wing death squad in the town of Passay in the Philippines when Flores was four years old. Flores also told his lawyer he had been raped by three men when he was l3. From then on, he said he could only find comfort in the company of transvestites. He gradually became one of them and went for breast augmentation. He is now hoping to undergo a sex transplant operation to become a complete woman, the court heard.

SINGAPORE: A 20-year-old Vietnamese man and a 60-year-old Vietnamese woman, believed to be involved in several pickpocketing cases, were arrested on Thursday.

They were caught at about 2.30pm in the vicinity of a shopping mall along Victoria Street, when they were spotted following closely behind a passer-by.

The 60-year-old woman was noted looking into the bag of the passer-by while the man kept watch.

They were detained after the woman extended her right hand into the bag and walked away with her accomplice.

Officers seized four ez-link cards, two mobile phones and three micro SB memory cards that are believed to have been stolen by the duo.
