3 Malaysian gang members caught after shoot-out

SHAH ALAM - Selangor police arrested three men, including one with a pistol, following an hour-long car chase yesterday.

State deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said police received a tip-off that three men in a Perodua Viva were acting suspiciously in front of a restaurant at Taman Subang Perdana, here, about 2.30am.

A police patrol car approached the vehicle and instructed the men to step out of the car.

The suspects evaded inspection by reversing it, narrowly missing one of the policemen.

"The car might have hit the police officer if he had not been quick enough to get out of the way," said Thaiveegan at the state police headquarters yesterday.

The police gave chase until the Guthrie Corridor Expressway, where the suspects opened fire at the police but missed.

Thaiveegan said several other police multi-purpose vehicles from here, Sungai Buloh and Klang were also called in to assist in capturing the suspects.

The suspects fired two more shots at the police in Section 20, here, before they headed towards Padang Jawa and Taman Sentosa, Klang.

The suspects' car then hit another car before crashing into a road divider.

The suspects tried to escape on foot but police apprehended one of the suspects, a 27-year-old, at Jalan Dato Dagang 19, Taman Sentosa.

Police later found the second 26-year-old suspect hiding in a drain. He had with him a Smith and Wesson pistol.

The third suspect, also 26, ran into an oil palm plantation, but was later captured by police at 9.15am.

Police have identified the three suspects as members of Gang 08.

The second suspect had four criminal records: two for robbery and two for having drugs.

Thaiveegan said the pistol was believed to have been robbed from a 60-year-old businessman during an incident in Klang last Tuesday.

The case is being investigated for attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearms.

Gang 36 one of the most feared in the nation

KUALA LUMPUR: Gang 36 was originally made up of Chinese members before it was taken over by Indians to become one of the most feared secret societies in the country.

The gang’s evolution has been attributed to the growing reluctance of its Chinese founding members to get involved in the “nitty-gritty” of organised crime.

“Tired of getting their hands dirty, they recruited Indians to do it,” said a crime expert who declined to be named.

“After some time, the Chinese gangsters were outnumbered by the Indians and before long, it was being seen as an Indian gang. But that is not completely true as most gangs in Malaysia have a racially diverse membership,” he said.

The expert said there were still Chinese members in Gang 36, but they played a more passive role as “investors”. They pour money into the gang to fund its activities which allow them to double their money.

“Most of the time they would have legitimate jobs like in real estate.”

The expert said the pattern of evolution was commonly seen in many other gangs in the country.

“In the beginning, there were only Chinese gangs, which was a spillover from the triads from China,” he said.

He said the fear surrounding Gang 36 had led to many thugs just using its name to set up their own units, adding that membership was hard to verify with it being such a loose organisation.

The influx of Indians into gangs was also due to the country’s current socioeconomic climate and the unstructured nature of the criminal underworld itself, said MIC Youth chief T. Mohan.

“Poverty plays a huge role. More and more Indian youths are driven to join gangs because they feel they have no other way to make a living,” he said.

He said new gangsters claimed they belonged to a certain gang for the sake of being associated. He disagreed with talk that the current spate of shootings were coordinated assassinations in a turf war.

“The gangs are not that organised. These shootings are unrelated disputes between small groups which have a newfound freedom to use firearms,” he said.

Police detain three suspects linked to five thugs shot dead in Penang

BATU GAJAH: Perak police have arrested three suspected members of secret societies linked to the five men who were shot dead by the police in Penang recently.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the arrest was part of the ongoing 'Ops Cantas' to weed out hardcore criminals and secret society members in the state.

He said those detained knew the five men who were gunned down in Penang.

"They are from the same gang, for example, '04' or '08' gangs. Such groups exist in Perak and in Penang," he told reporters after a farewell visit to the Batu Gajah police headquarters on Thursday, in conjunction with his transfer to Selangor from next month.

Mohd Shukri said the police had also identified several secret societies, which were involved in crimes in the state.

On Monday, the police shot dead five members of a secret society, believed to be hired killers and involved in murder and attempted murder cases in Penang, Kedah and Negri Sembilan.

The shootout between the police and the thugs, aged between 23 and 27, occurred at a flat in Sungai Nibong. - Bernama

Failed assassination attempt on Heavenly King.

Businessman's car gets blown up

A wealthy businessman, who owns several restaurants and nightclubs in the city, escaped death when his luxury car was blown up even as he was in the car. Both he and his driver escaped unhurt.

A bomb strapped below the vehicle apparently exploded sending ball bearings ripping through the boot of the Jaguar.

The businessman, a Datuk Seri, and his driver were passing Taman Taynton View in Cheras on Monday night when the device was detonated on Monday night.

The businessman, however, is said to be a former detainee under the Emergency Ordinance and had been detained in Simpang Renggam for more than a year.

According to the report lodged by his driver, they were driving past Jalan Nadchantiram in the area at about 8.45pm when the back of the car blew up. He said they stopped the car and rushed out.

When they inspected the damage later, there were ball bearings in the boot and the back of the car was blown off.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the the blast damaged the rear of the car and no one, not even other motorists or passers-by, were injured.

Police believe the incident could be an act of sabotage.

It is believed the Datuk Seri, who received his title from Pahang, had been detained under the Emergency Ordinance in 2005 and released 17 months later. There is also talk that he may have been involved in underworld activities that may have led to the attack on him and his car.

No clue over motive, says businessman whose car was blown up

A wealthy businessman whose car was blown up Monday night says he has no clue about the motive behind the incident.

"I have no idea why this happened and do not know who was behind it," he told The Star when contacted by telephone.

Asked if any underworld rivalry could be involved, the former Emergency Ordinance detainee – a Datuk Seri – said he did not know.

He, however, said he was now in the real estate industry and has not been involved in other activities for long.

He refused to comment further, saying: "Most importantly, no one was hurt in the incident."

The businessman, who is believed to own restaurants and nightclubs in the city, and his driver were passing through Taman Taynton View in Cheras here when the back of his luxury car blew up.

Both of them stopped the car and rushed out unhurt.

Six men were wounded after two gunmen on a motorcycle fired “random” shots at an eatery in Taman Kasawari, Simpang Ampat, yesterday.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the group was having a drink at the eatery when the assailants arrived on a motorcycle.

"Upon reaching the eatery, the two assailants quickly fired random shots at the six men.

"Two of them sustained severe injuries to the ribs and buttocks," he told reporters at the scene early today.

He said the victims, aged between 20 and 50, were taken to Sungai Bakap Hospital.

"According to witnesses, the two assailants wore full-faced helmet and sped off immediately after firing the shots," Abdul Rahim said.

He said further investigation into the case was being done under the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Abdul Rahim did not dismissed the possibility that the incident was connected to the cases involving a triad gang whose five members were shot dead recently.

"We have yet to ascertain the motive, but we believe it is connected to the cases involving the triad gang. We will track down those involved immediately," he added. - Bernama, August 24, 2013.

Sunday, Aug 25, 2013

NIBONG TEBAL, MALAYSIA - Six men narrowly escaped death when a gunman opened fire at them outside a coffeeshop in Taman Kasawari, Simpang Ampat, here.

The friends, aged between 30 and 50, were admitted to the Sungai Bakap Hospital after being shot on their legs, arms and buttocks. Their condition has been reported to be stable.

One of the victims, factory van driver R. Balasundram, 53, said he had gone to the coffeeshop shortly after 10pm on Friday for drinks after sending some workers home.

"I spotted five of my friends there and decided to join them. While drinking, I noticed two men on a motorcycle riding by very slowly," he recalled. "Suddenly, I heard a loud noise. I thought someone was playing with fire crackers before I realised that they were gunshots," he added at his home in Transkrian.

Balasundram, whose leg was grazed by a bullet, was discharged at 1.30am yesterday.

Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said a man had suddenly whipped out a pistol and opened fire randomly at the group of friends before speeding off on a motorcycle.

"The victims were rushed to the hospital by passers-by."

Asked if the shooting was linked to Gang 04, he said it was still too early to tell, adding that the investigating officer was trying to determine the motive.

SDCP Abdul Rahim said the case has been classified as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat said police would only record statements from the victims after they had been discharged from the hospital.

He urged witnesses to come forward by contacting the Rakan COP hotline at 04-2691 999 or to any police station.

On Monday, five suspected Gang 04 members, believed to be linked to nine shooting cases this year, were shot dead by the police.

Two more shooting incidents in M'sia

Two of the wounded men in the Penang shooting incident.

The New Paper
Tuesday, Aug 27, 2013

Malaysia was hit by two more shooting incidents on Friday night with the crime wave which has swept the country showing no sign of abating.

In the mainland Penang town of Nibong Tebal, six men, aged between 30 and 50, were having a drink at a coffee shop when they were suddenly attacked, The Star reported.

The police chief of Penang, Senior Deputy Commissioner Abdul Rahim Hanafi, said they were shot at randomly by two assailants on a motorbike.

"The victims sustained gunshot wounds on the legs and buttocks, and were rushed to hospital," Mr Abdul Rahim said.
"
All the victims are found to be in stable condition.

"Witnesses said the two assailants wore full-faced helmets and sped off immediately after firing the shots," he said.

In another incident in Ipoh, police nabbed four suspects said to be involved in gang violence after a shootout which lasted almost two hours, the New Straits Times reported.

Officers raided the suspects' house and arrested two of them while the other two tried to flee via the roof.

Said deputy state police chief A. Paramasivam: "When we ambushed the suspects' house, we managed to capture two of them on the ground floor.

"Another suspect, who tried to flee through the roof, however fell into the neighbour's house. The fourth suspect, who had a weapon, was captured at a vacant house nearby."

He added: "During the ambush, we also found several packets of (the drug) Erimin 5, and seized a Beretta automatic pistol along with a 9mm bullet casing.
"
None of the policemen and suspects were injured in the incident."

Faced with rising crime, the Malaysian government has formed a special police unit comprising 400 highly trained officers, to target drug lords.

"They will hit out at the drug syndicates and the underworld without warning," The Star quoted the Home Minister, Dr Ahmad Zahid, as saying.
"
We want to hit the drug world where it hurts the most by apprehending the big-time players."

Gang 08 member among four nabbed in shootout

The Star/Asia News Network
Tuesday, Aug 27, 2013

IPOH - One of the four men arrested after a shootout in Taman Syukur on Friday is a Gang 08 member.
Perak police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the 45-year-old man, however, did not have any previous conviction.

"We are investigating whether the other three, aged between 34 and 52, are also gang members. The three have multiple criminal records and are wanted by other state police contingents," he said here yesterday.

"Our investigation showed that all four are linked to drug syndicates in the state."

On Friday, police raided a double-storey house, which doubled as a mini drug laboratory, in Taman Syukur here to arrest the four.

The raiding team was quick to nab two of them while the other two tried to escape through the roof.

A shootout ensued before all of them were detained.

SDCP Mohd Shukri said police seized a Beretta Compact pistol with three 9mm bullets, a black bag with 24 live bullets, 100 strips of Eramin 5 drug, drug-processing equipment and a Proton Wira Aeroback.

He said with their arrest, police had solved the murder of a 25-year-old man who was gunned down in Kampung Simee in July.

"All four men will be remanded until Aug 30, and will be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the murder," he said adding that the Ops Cantas anti-crime crackdown was still ongoing.

On an incident where some men had apparently demanded money from the organisers of the Hari Raya open house of Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Bagan Datoh, Perak CID chief SAC Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim said two people had been detained in Teluk Intan on Sunday in connection with the incident.

Organised crime ring names to be revealed soon

The Star/Asia News Network
Tuesday, Aug 27, 2013

PUTRAJAYA - The names of organised crime syndicates will be un**veiled in the media soon.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the announcement was to show the seriousness of the police in tackling serious.

The naming of underworld gangs comes on the heel of Ops Cantas Khas, a police operation which has seen 1,081 people nabbed by the authorities since Aug 17.

"We want to inform the public that there are illegal bodies conducting criminal activities and (we want the) people to act together with the police to curb crime.

"In this case, I think what is being done by the police is not something that should just be supported by the people but it should get the co-operation of the community at large," Dr Ahmad Zahid told newsmen yesterday.

Although the operation is a nationwide crackdown on organised crime, Dr Ahmad Zahid said Ops Cantas Khas would soon give more focus on Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

This was because police have identified hotspots in the Klang Valley where organised crime was being planned, he said.

"We have records which show that former detainees, whether from Simpang Renggam (detention centre) or other places, are concentrated at several hotspots," he added.

Ops Cantas Khas is being jointly conducted by Bukit Aman, state police contingents and police districts under the Crime Prevention Act.

[h=1]Details of 49 gangs released today[/h]
By KOI KYE LEE
[h=2]PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry will make public details of 49 criminal organisations today.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Secretary-General Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi would reveal the details, including the locations in which the criminal organisations operated. “I have signed a gazette that declares these criminal organisations as illegal because of their involvement in racketeering.” Zahid said under the gazette, no organisation or group was allowed to use the name, symbol or premises that were related to criminal organisations.

“Those found guilty face a maximum jail term of five years and a penalty of RM15,000,” he said yesterday after receiving a courtesy call from Polish ambassador to Malaysia, Adam Waclaw Jelonek. Other than to combat criminal organisations, he said, this was also an indication that the authorities took a no-nonsense approach to fighting crime.

“This shows the government’s commitment to protect the public against these organisations. The public’s safety is vital.”

Asked if the names of members of criminal organisations, made up mainly of triads, would be revealed, Zahid said this was the police's prerogative.

"It is also the police's prerogative to announce the number of members in these organisations."

He said the authorities, with the help of the police and Registrar of Societies, would track attempts by criminal organisations to change their names and modus operandi.

"If these criminal organisations are involved in any business, our ties with the Companies Commission of Malaysia via the police will track them."

Meanwhile, he said outsourcing companies appointed by the government would bear the cost of deporting some 500,000 illegal immigrants in the crackdown taking place from Sunday.

He said the companies would work with embassies and high commissions on the crackdown.

"It is a government-to-government effort because I have discussed this with the governments of Indonesia and Bangladesh, and they have agreed to the efforts taken by our government."

The crackdown will involve 135,000 personnel from the Immigration Department, police, Armed Forces, Rela, Civil Defence Department, National Registration Department and local councils.

The raids will be conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Johor.

He said illegal immigrants would be deported immediately to prevent overcrowding at 12 detention centres, each of which has a capacity of 1,000 people.
