SINGAPORE - Police have arrested two young men, aged 17 and 21 years old, for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On Jun 30, 2013 at about 11.50pm, police received information that two men were splashing paint outside at a HBD unit located along Yishun Ring Road.

Upon receipt of the report, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division promptly responded and managed to locate and detain the two suspects in the vicinity of Yishun Ring Rd.

The suspects were placed under arrest for loanshark harassment following a brief interview by the officers.

Loanshark-related paraphernalia such as cans of paint and mobile phones containing suspected debtors' records found in their possession were seized as case exhibits.

Preliminary investigations indicate that they had carried out loanshark harassment by splashing paint at debtors' units and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB blocks for monetary gain.

First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division HQ, Assistant Commissioner of Police Keok Tong San, commended his officers for their prompt response and the alertness of the resident.

He said, "Police are determined to come down hard on all those who are involved in loansharking activities, causing annoyance and disruption to public peace and security."
