Samut Prakan police arrested a Singaporean man, Tan Hong Huat, on Thursday on charges of human trafficking after he allegedly lured a Thai woman into prostitution in South Africa.

The 56-year-old was apprehended at a house in Muang district, Samut Prakan province, Pol Maj Gen Chavalit Sawaengpuech, chief of the Anti-Human Trafficking Police Division, said.

Police said he denied the charges, claiming he had only advised a friend on job opportunities in South Africa.

Mr Tan, who has reportedly lived in Thailand for five years with a Thai wife, was apprehended on an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on June 24 for colluding with other people on human trafficking.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a 36-year-old woman after she returned to Thailand on April 29 from South Africa. The Songkhla woman said she was persuaded to work as a traditional masseuse in Johannesburg but ended up being forced to be a prostitute by a Chinese couple after arriving in the South African city on Jan 5.

She claimed that an official helped her escape in February and she returned to Thailand.

Other suspects were detained and more could be arrested, Pol Maj Gen Chavalit said but did not offer details.
