Youths, parents express concern over slashing case

By Saifulbahri Ismail

SINGAPORE: Youths and parents Channel NewsAsia spoke to have expressed concern over the slashing incident at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard. Most agree security around the mall should be stepped up.

Twenty-year-old Wilson Siau was chased down by a gang of youths and attacked in public near the mall on Saturday evening. It was reported that Mr Siau was beaten up because of his "walking style".

The full-time national serviceman was attacked and slashed with parangs by a group of youths.

Eric Tang, an eyewitness, said: "I was walking past the cinema and I saw the three guys coming up to him. He said: 'I don't like the way you walk', then they just bashed him up."

Miki Nomura, a student, said: "It's quite scary how people are just walking around… but they are getting bashed up for the way they walk; no reason for people to do that."

Another student, Shawn Ng, said: "There are many youngsters here. You can't judge someone just because of the way they walk or their demeanour, so it's definitely a concern."

Parents were also shocked.

Amalina Jamaludin said: "This is a new phenomenon… I have to remind my children and also friends about how to behave in public."

Cathay Cineleisure Orchard said the mall is equipped with security measures, such as CCTV cameras. Security officers are also on constant patrol while police conduct additional checks on weekends.

This is the second slashing incident that has happened at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard in less than a year; a 23-year-old man was critically injured after being attacked by a group of men last December.

Youths here say security needs to be increased.

"Definitely around areas where there are more youths, maybe there should be more security… it will scare off away some people and make them think twice before doing what they do," said Ruth Wong, a student.

"They should step it up a bit, but not over the top… they (should) not (be) right up in your face," said Nigel Lopez.

The mall said it will continue to work with the police to enforce security.

How should sinkees walk to avoid being slashed to death? The PAP walk or the WP walk or the GMS walk?

There are lots of foreigners who have terrible walking style, why not target them and do the country a favour?

The man was chased down one of Singapore's busiest shopping thoroughfares.

When he tripped outside Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, he was slashed.

A gang of men set upon the victim, believed to be in his early 20s, with knives.

The incident occurred at a little after 9 pm last night. Police said they received a call at 9.12 pm.

When the emergency services arrived, the man was found semi-conscious, and was taken to the Singapore General Hospital. An eyewitness, 22, who did not want to be named told The New Paper on Sunday: "When he fell, the (assailants) ran off and jumped into three different cabs."

When we visited the scene late last night, police investigators were combing the area, compiling evidence. An area in front of the mall's main sliding doors had been cordoned off. There were also copious bloodstains on the floor. Some blood had even splattered on the mall's glass doors and there were blood-soaked tissues scattered around.

Eyewitness said the victim was seen bleeding profusely from his head.

A woman, 46, who gave her name only as Madam Emma, said police had approached her to ask if she had seen a man wearing a black jacket and pants. But she added: "I had just reached the mall (around 11pm) to catch a movie, so I didn't see anything."

This is the latest incident involving the mall, which is popular with the younger set.

Just months ago, in December last year, a 23-year-old man was seriously hurt when he was slammed to the ground and fractured his skull. His assailant's case is still pending in the courts.

Orchard slashing: Victim's 'arrogant' walk riled gang of youths

20130619.165115_20130619-slash.jpg

By Melody Zaccheus
The Straits Times
Wednesday, Jun 19, 2013

SINGAPORE - It was the 20-year-old's "cocky" walking style that purportedly riled a group of 10 tattooed youths who set upon their victim with parangs outside Cathay Cineleisure Orchard on Saturday night.

Mr Wilson Siau, a full-time national serviceman, said he was smoking in an empty space between the mall and *Scape with five other friends after dinner at about 9pm.

The youths approached him and commented on his walking style, particularly the way he swung his arms, which they described as "arrogant".

Ignoring their taunts, Mr Siau turned to walk away when all 10 went after him.

He told Shin Min Daily News: "At least three of them punched and kicked me. Another two with parangs slashed at my head. To protect my head, I wrapped both my hands around it, resulting in numerous slashes on my arms and lots of blood."

The parangs are said to have been about 20cm long. The attack lasted about a minute until security guards from the mall emerged. The attackers are said to have fled in three taxis.

The victim said he recognises his assailants and will assist police investigations.

On Saturday night, Mr Siau underwent an operation for his head injuries. Yesterday, he received stitches for the wounds on his hands. His arms are in casts.

He added that one of his fingers had almost been slashed off and required surgery.

He is now in a stable condition at Singapore General Hospital.

Army pals said Mr Siau was a transport operator and an "obedient and nice guy who likes to joke around".

His supervisor, Sergeant Mohamed Azmi, 24, who visited him yesterday, said: "It's senseless that his attackers were so agitated by such a small thing. It's his size; that's how he walks."

Last December, a 23-year-old man was left in a critical condition after he was attacked by a group of men at the mall.

Shopkeepers and shoppers at Cineleisure and *Scape, both of which are popular youth hangouts, say they are worried about their safety. Some say petty theft, confrontations and fights to varying degrees occur at least once a month.

They suggest increasing police patrols, screening suspicious- looking youths and having more security guards along the stretch.

Said a woman named Marie, 24, who works at a cookie shop at the mall: "The area can get very crowded on weekends and it can be hard to manage the crowd. I was quite traumatised after seeing all the blood yesterday."
