A screengrab from the video showing a supervisor physically abusing his co-worker. The faces of the people have been blurred to protect their identities.

SINGAPORE: A 17-second video showing up an office bully is making the rounds on the Internet.

An intern at the company caught the act and uploaded the video. He claimed his supervisor constantly bullies a co-worker in front of other colleagues.

He said he confronted the supervisor about his behaviour but whatever explanation he has got has been insincere.

Channel NewsAsia understood that the 29-year-old worker has made a police report.

Social media users have reacted with shock and outrage.

Jeff Yeo said on his Facebook account that it is a shame this happened in Singapore. He added such behaviour must be reported.

Another Facebook user Jane Lee appealed to the boss to in the video to have some empathy.

She asked: "If you had kids and they were slapped like that at work, how would you feel?"

Some social media users said the employee should stand up for himself.

Amutha Murtusamy said that the worker should leave his job after reporting his boss to the authorities while Nab Ahmad asked why the employee in the video didn't try to stop his boss from doing it over and over.

There were also praises for the intern.

Facebook user Christopher Kris commended him for capturing the video and seeking justice for his co-worker.

A screengrab from the video showing a supervisor physically abusing his co-worker. The faces of the people have been blurred to protect their identities.

SINGAPORE: Police said a report has been lodged with regard to an incident of physical abuse at the workplace.

The report was lodged by the 29-year-old victim.

This comes as the incident was filmed and uploaded on video-sharing site YouTube.

The video documenting a man hitting another man went viral after it was uploaded on May 18.

The original video has now been taken down from YouTube but is still making its rounds online.

The video is understood to have been taken by an intern who was working at the office.

A Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) spokesperson has confirmed that the intern is a student with the school.

The spokesperson said the student started his internship just two days before he recorded the video on May 15.

SIM said in the interest of the student, it terminated his internship with the company immediately. SIM added the student has been offered assistance.

Meanwhile, in a statement released on Monday evening, the Manpower Ministry (MOM) said it was notified of the video via email on Monday.

MOM said it has been in touch with the intern who recorded the video.

The ministry also reminds employers they are expected to treat their employees fairly and with respect.

It added that in situations where employees feel threatened, they should report to their supervisor or human resource officer.

MOM said if they belong to a union, victims of abuse should seek advice and assistance from their unions.

And in the case of physical harm, victims of abuse should report to the police immediately.

Supervisor in slapping video apologises to intern's parents

SINGAPORE - The supervisor who was filmed repeatedly slapping a 29-year-old intern has apologised to his parents.

However, they refused to accept the apology from the supervisor known as Alan, the Shin Min Daily News reported.

Video of boss abusing employee goes viral

The Chinese daily said that when the parents looked him up at his office this morning to demand an explanation for his actions, the supervisor apologised and claimed that he did it in a fit of anger.

The parents also told Alan that their son would not be turning up for work from Tuesday.

They told Shin Min that their son appeared to be under a lot of stress from his job at the local private firm. They added that he regularly worked long hours, reaching home as late as 11pm on some nights.

The intern was paid a monthly allowance of between $500 and $600 by the company.

I hope they take him to the cleaners for this. I would like to see our lawyers who readily offered pro bono work for the Todds help this chap.

When the intern told him to calm down, he proceeded to slap the guy even more. So obviously it was not out of anger.

Disappointed with the cabinet minister and MOM for the lukewarm statement.

I realized that Singapore local media, including AsiaOne, New Paper, Shin Min, yahoo sg, ChannelNewsAsia, etc, are useless and without any depth in their reporting. Not only that, they like to blur out faces and give wrong info, like whether it is Alan Tan or Eric Tan, they can't even get the name right.

Are you sure it is Eric Tan. This guy is in grassroots and a PAP guy.

The company is GSK Global Consulting Pte Ltd. Boss of the company is Eric Tan.

the Linkin profile may not be the right one, but ChannelNewsAsia forum mentions it the dickhead Alan whatever comes from GSK.

That's why the local news media are freaking fucked up. If I'm a media reporter, no stones would be left un-turned.

Eric Tan is the Chairman and CEO of GSK Global. Here is the scoop. He is indeed active in grassroots, PAP, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Association of Small and Medium Business and big time porlumpar.

Here is an amazing fact. He is one of the judges this year for the premier HR event of Asia - HRM Awards - 2013. This is where the best HR practitioners - Individuals and Companies in various aspects of HR management are recognised. What a "shining" example his company has set. His supervisor must be worthy of at least one award.

It also explains why MOM's press comments were lukewarm despite the shocking nature of the incident. No heroic comments such as "no one will be left behind", " we will not tolerate", "no stones will be left unturned to find the root cause", "this incident will be thoroughly investigated", etc. I understand a series of phone calls were made to.

Also explains why SIM was reluctant to act when the intern reported it and also explains why the prostitute press did not display their characteristic Yaw Shin Leong investigative spirit.

Let's wait to see how the police is going to handle this. The boy had reported.

Now, typically, as I had expected from most families, the parents just do not know how to handle this.

Always get bullied by those in power. That's why their son so timid.

Sadly the Police have no powers as its just simple assault. They will give the victim notice on how to lodge magistrate's complaint and medical form to see doctor. Unless the Police brass for public interest use their intervention powers.

It is also compoundable offence. I am sure the family will be under tremendous pressure to accept above table and under table money to settle.

Someone or some organisation must give the intern an award and air his heroic act.

Also they need to sack the culprit at a minimum. Especially after the CEO gave so many bullshit stories of he going beyond industry benchmark in looking after his staff HR wise. What a fraud.

Intern who exposed workplace abuse lauded as 'hero'

20130523.204452_yang.jpg

AsiaOne
Thursday, May 23, 2013

SINGAPORE - The intern who captured footage of a fellow intern being hit and scolded by a software firm owner has been lauded by the public for exposing the abuse.

He has been getting praise from the online community for recording the abuse and stepping forward to expose it.

But 23-year-old Yang Jie Xiang told Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao that he believed another person in a similar situation would have acted in the same way as him.

Yang put up the 17-second video on Youtube, which showed the owner of software company Encore eServices, slapping a 29-year-old university graduate.

The video has since garnered the attention of NTUC deputy Secretary-General Heng Chee How, who condemned the abuse of workers in a Facebook post. It has also attracted the Ministry of Manpower's attention, as the agency stepped forward to investigate the abuse claims.

The 29-year-old intern and his family has also since lodged a police report.

The victim's parents earlier confronted their son's supervisor, who then apologised for slapping the man. They refused to accept his apology.

Meanwhile, netizens has been heaping praises on him not just for his sense of justice but for his good looks.

The whistleblower is also garnering attention for his good looks.

One netizen, Lily Sng, was quoted in the Chinese daily: "Your parents must be proud of you for doing what you have to do and setting yourself as an example of being a good-looking hero."

Another netizen, Chang Murng Sing, praised Yang for being willing to step up, but commented that there were not enough of such courageous youths.
