A man suspected to be a member of a notorious northern Vietnamese gang that allegedly assaulted two men and fired shots in Ho Chi Minh City, and is suspected of other crimes, including an armed robery, has turned himself in.

Phan Anh Dung, 36, Monday surrendered nearly two weeks after two of his accomplices, Tran Thanh Hai, 33, and Nguyen Quy Tu, 24, were arrested at the airport, Lieutenant-colonel Nguyen Nhat Thanh of the District 1 police in HCMC said.

They had been about to board a flight to Hanoi with two guns and more than 40 bullets.

The police said they are still looking for 24-year-old Tran Quoc Viet and another man known as Thang.

On July 17 the gang beat up Le Minh Thinh, 46, at a restaurant in District 1, allegedly at the behest of someone who had a conflict with Thinh over a business location.

Thinh’s daughter, Le Thi Phuong Thao, 23, and her friend Nguyen Hoang Phuc, 26, tried to stop them, but they hit Phuc on his head with gun butts.

Before leaving they fired a few shots in the air, the police said.

The gang was allegedly involved in debt collection, assaults, and other illegal businesses in the northern province of Nam Dinh, where they hail from, the police said.

They are also suspected of carrying out an armed robbery in Hoa Binh Province.
