Singapore - Singapore has called off a deal with Taiwan's double world pool champion Wu Chia-ching because the player failed to finalise his citizenship in the city-state, a media report said Saturday.
In March last year, Wu, 21, announced that he wanted to become a Singapore citizen and represent the island state, a move that caused outrage in Taiwan but was welcomed by Singapore's pool association Cuesports.
After Wu did not turn up for official appointments to obtain Singapore citizenship, however, Cuesports said it was no longer interested in signing an agreement with Wu,
the Straits Times newspaper reported.
"The deal is off. We are not interested in him any more," the report quoted Cuesports president Subhas Anandan as saying.
"We do not want prima donnas in our team," he said, adding that the association would rather concentrate on raising the standard of local players.
Wu's representatives had been asking for additional perks before closing a deal with Singapore, which made negotiations difficult, the report said.
The Taiwan pool ace had been granted Singapore residence last year and worked as a playing partner for Singapore's team.
Singapore offered Wu 130,000 US dollars a year and other benefits.
