A female engineer who graduated from a Chinese university subjected to US sanctions and started out designing air defence systems is now steering the C929 programme aimed at producing a home-grown airliner as advanced and spacious as the widebodies made by Boeing and Airbus.

Having left her mark on China’s decades-long endeavour to launch the C909 and C919 regional and narrowbody models, Zhao Chunling has been lead designer for the ambitious widebody jet programme since 2023 as Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (Comac) attempts to play catch-up with the Western duopoly.

Zhao graduated from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xian, the capital of Shaanxi province, in 1991.

I would like to have a chat with her. Tell Her not to build the widebody but to develop the C919 further. Make it longer. Fly further by designing new wings. One for short flight. Another for long distance. Up to 8000nm.

For all its mistakes, atrocities and pigheaded policies in the early decades, the CCP did one thing right: raise the social status of women through education and laws enforcing gender equality. In many areas, the women have outstripped the men, especially in the international sporting arena.

Otherwise China would still be in the dark feudal ages, with their women still binding their feet and serving feudal lords as concubines and whores and resigned to bearing children to carry on the family name.

Russia think hit spot on with this narrow body jet.

MC21 400. I was told it is designed to fly up to 12k km. Not 10k km as stated in video.

Just fyi, the Russian mc21 was ready for the market just as ukraine crisis broke and sanctions imposed on Russia. As the planes uses Western engines and avionics, it could not be assembled. Hence Ukraine crisis maybe to sabotage russian plane too. Who knows. Like liberation day on China plane c919.
