I have to agree with you. Those Chinese are so obsessed with imported goods that even cosmetics are from Japan and Korea, luxury apparels from Europe, etc, are among their wants and desires. The reason why many of such items are not selling well domestically is because of their Chinese government's high tariffs. Otherwise, the richer Chinese won't need to go overseas and buy them back. They buy fewer imported goods because of the tariffs that the Chinese government imposes. That's the crux of the whole problem and the cause of the trade imbalance.
GM sells 70% more cars in China than it does in the US. However because of the 25% tariff on imported vehicles from the US GM is forced into joint ventures with Chinese companies who then steal the technology.
If there were no tariffs GM could sell cars made in the USA instead of having to assemble in China and the trade imbalance would look a lot better.
Trumps goal is to eliminate or reduce these tariffs. I wish him the very best. He is a great President.
@PTADER is just talking cock when he says that generally the Chinese are big savers. The old Chinese may be, but not so for the present day Chinese because most of them wants prestige, show-offs and face. Even if the old Chinese were good savers, the government is not doing the right thing by allowing those big SOEs to continue to bleed. The vast amount of bad debts from these loss making SOEs will eventually cripple and crash their monetary system. Just wait and see how China will evolve 1 year from now.
