what a coincidence...his bird-day falls on Malaysia day.

No coincidence. Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaysia on 31 Aug 1963. LKY had asked for a postponement till 16 Sep 1963 to settle matters. Those matters turned out to be:

• Unilateral declaration of independence from the UK on 1 Sep 1963
• shock polls a few days later to catch the opposition unprepared.

I think that LKY saw Malaysia as his greatest achievement that would be celebrated along with his own birthday always.
