Singapore Democrats

csj_wb-imf.jpg

We are glad to announce that we have reached the target of $20,000 in contributions for Dr Chee Soon Juan's fine. We wish to thank each and everyone of you who have donated to the fund to keep Dr Chee out of prison so that he is available to lead the SDP during the upcoming GE. The final tally is $20,120.

This is a historical development in that it is the first time that Singaporeans have rallied together to show such encouraging support for an opposition cause.

More than just keeping Dr Chee out of jail, Singaporeans have rallied and sent a message that they will not sit idly by when the opposition is persecuted.

Thank you for your contributions

It is also significant that the effort has been entirely driven on the Internet. In this regard, the Singapore Democrats would like to acknowledge the role and the support given by the online community such as newsblogs Temasek Review, The Online Citizen, 3in1 Kopitiam as well as forummers in Sam's Alfresco Coffee Shop, SgForums and other online forums.

It is important that we continue to leverage on cyberspace to increase political space in Singapore. This exercise has given civil society and the opposition a gauge on the power of the new media. It has shown that when we come together, we can be an effective force. We can only gain confidence as we build up our influence to open up society in Singapore.

The donations came in big and small packages. Some were in the thousands but many were smaller amounts of $10. Most inspiring was the fact that many were youths. A few indicated that they were financially not well-off but wanted to do their part for democracy. One retiree even gave $500 and would have given more if he did not have to pay for his dialysis treatment. We declined the offer but the donor insisted that we accept it.

To this gentleman and to all of you, we say a big thank you.

Now we press on with our fight for freedom and justice. The SDP is, and will always be, your voice.

Yours sincerely,

Is this considered as political donations? If so, how is SDP going to account for foreign funds?

I think CSJ might have solved one problem only to create themselves a bigger one.

But at least we have one more opposition battler to give PAP a few punches during the GE.

20k down the drain. he will surely goes in again

Stop giving negative views, we should appreciate good news...

I sent the link from the donation article to some of my colleagues and all of them immediately reacted with laughter and thinks its a joke. Therein lies Chee's biggest problem. SDP doesn't get it. They didn't get it when CSJ first took over and they still don't get it now. Who are the pple really supporting SDP? Pple who hate PAP. Most pple in SG do not like trouble makers and that is exactly how they many see CSJ, a trouble maker. He isn't going to win more votes by making headline news with his constant antics. Most pple who like stunts like this are pple who hate PAP and will vote for him whether or not he does anything. However the pple whom he really need to win over are those that do not like to see antics like these from their politicians. Little wonder how SDP manages to lose even more votes every election.

IMO the best thing he could do is to distant himself from any political party and continue doing whatever he is do. It creates awareness however it also damages the image of the political party associated with him. By going independant and not associate himself with any political party, he is on the one hand creating awareness among locals and at the same time not destroying the image of the opposition party

I tend to share this feeling that Dr Chee is better suited to be a civil leader, but then I am still not in a stage when I can judge whether Dr Chee is truly a fella with a mission to serve his country & his people above all else.

I learn the lesson fr watching MM LKY,during the initial years,LKY really was working for his country & his people, but that was when the interest of his country(also our country)& his people and his own interest were one & the same

Now that they are different,we can see very clearly that MM LKY is palcing his own, persoanl & his family above the interest of the country & the citizens(u and me)

I am not in a stage to judge Dr Chee yet.

Yup. Even before he gets elected he is already making his supporters pay for his stupid stunts. Can't imagine if he were to run the country.

I think it is such a mindset that is causing more and more splits in the opposition.

People rejected by NSP, SDP, WP etc. or reject them because they cannot be Chairman or Sec-Gen, end up forming their own parties exactly because a lot of people like me and us say any opposition is good.

The result is 8 to 10 opposition parties contesting against PAP and more 3-corner possibilities.

After hearing that yet another new party may be registered by this year, I'm changing my mind and spoil my vote if my ward is contested by a kuchi kurap opposition.

hahaha....how ah?
I was planning to donate $866,558......can I still donate or the account has been closed already????

Well thought and well said. I think the same way too.

What you have said are things I have been saying for a long time and really geting very tired of saying.

Now, I just want to know who are those that donate the money so that I can give them an award for donting money back to PAP.

Talk about dumb idiots.

Well thought and well said. I think the same way too.

This is how i would vote:

PAP vs Any Opposition - I would vote Opposition.

PAP vs SDP - I would vote PAP

PAP vs SDP vs any Opposition - I will spolit my vote.

I think Perspective and Cleareyes have a point. We must not encourage egoists to start so many parties to confuse the electorate and ruin any real chance of a 2- to 3-party system. The best way is to make them lose their deposit and don't come back.

Why would you spoil your vote for
PAP vs SDP vs any opposition?

Doesn't make sense considering your first 2 decisions.

Regrettably, opposition politics is still young in SG and admittedly fractured. Ultimately, the people would like to vote for a united opposition, which should carry out the people's agenda against the exploitative PAP.

But extrapolating from the ideal of a united opposition, what then is stopping people from getting a Hobson's choice when there is hardly any difference on the surface between the two but just the "flavour-of-the-season" political agenda during election time? (e.g. Democrats/Republicans. Liberals/Labor, Tories/Labour).

So, to me, for now, for the sake of a people's voice in Parliament, so long as got no 3-cornered fights, slipperman or Harbans Singhs, the oppos will have my vote.

I think it is such a mindset that is causing more and more splits in the opposition.
