I just watched Donnie yen's new action show yesterday. I had thought Chen zhen was shot and killed by the Japanese at the end of Bruce Lee's 1976 movie so I Googled for more info.

Turns out the character Chen zhen was created by Ni kuang, the same novelist who wrote Weisili/Wisely science fiction series. More interesting was the fact that Chen zhen has been reincarnated in several remakes, sequels and TV serials:
Films
Fist of Fury (1972) - the first appearance of Chen Zhen on media. Bruce Lee played Chen Zhen.
New Fist of Fury (1976) - a sequel to Fist of Fury. In this film, Chen's fiancee (played by Nora Miao) meets a young Taiwanese boy, Lung (played by Jackie Chan), who will become Chen Zhen's successor.
Fist of Legend (1994) - Jet Li played Chen Zhen. In the film, Chen fought to salvage Jingwu School's reputation after the death of Huo Yuanjia. He defeated a Japanese general who was responsible for his teacher's death and fled to Japan afterwards.
Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen (2010) - Donnie Yen reprises his role in this sequel to the 1995 series, set seven years after the original story. A mysterious stranger arrives from overseas and befriends a local mafia boss, to fight against the criminals and stop assassinations.[6]

TV series
The Legendary Fok (1981) - a 20 episodes Cantonese-language TV series based on the life story of Huo Yuanjia. Wong Yuen-sun played Huo Yuanjia and Bruce Leung played Chen Zhen.
The Fist (1982)[7] - a 20 episodes TV series as a follow-up to the 1981 TV series. Bruce Leung reprised his role as Chen Zhen with a new storyline. This classic ATV drama co-stars Candice Yu, Lau Wai-man, Choi King-fai and Bill Tung. In this version, Chen Zhen becomes a wanted criminal after avenging Huo Yuanjia. With assistance from the mayor of Shanghai, he manages to escape by faking his own death and moves to Beijing with Huo's son[8] where they led a reclusive life under new names. Chen's identity is eventually revealed when he comes into conflict later with the Japanese official Sato. His life was placed in danger but it also ignited his nationalist fervor. While Sato plans his revenge, Chen resolves to reopen Huo Yuanjia's Chin Woo Athletic Association to spread the Chin Woo spirit, his late teacher's legacy.
Fist of Fury (1995)[1] - 30 episodes. Donnie Yen played Chen Zhen. Yen has become homonymous with this role in other countries populated by Chinese other than Hong Kong, such as Taiwan and mainland China.
The Legend of Huo Yuanjia (2002) - a mainland Chinese TV series that focuses on Huo Yuanjia's life story, with Chen Zhen's story as a sub-plot. Vincent Zhao played Huo Yuanjia and Wu Yue played Chen Zhen.
Jingwu Yingxiong Chen Zhen (2002) - a sequel to The Legend of Huo Yuanjia. Wu Yue reprised his role as Chen Zhen, while Vincent Zhao appeared as Huo Yuanjia in flashbacks.
Huo Yuanjia (2008) - a remake of the original The Legendary Fok. Ekin Cheng played Huo Yuanjia and Jordan Chan played Chen Zhen. The fight scene in the last episode and the ending is reminiscent of Fist of Fury and the earlier adaptations.
Jingwu Chen Zhen (2008) - a sequel to Huo Yuanjia. Jordan Chan reprised his role as Chen Zhen.

It really makes me wonder why we chinese are still so desperate for "face" when everyone knows what really happened during the Sino-japanese war - We got our asses kicked bad. Do we really enjoy fooling ourselves that we were not 东亚病夫 less than 100 years ago?

When the whole civilisation was besotted by corruption, betrayal and cowardice, fictional character Chen zhen walked into a dojo and single handedly defeated scores of karate exponents?

Isn't this Ah Q 精神?

How to "unwatch" a movie?

Anyway that is not the main issue. The problem is the Ah Q mentality portrayed by chinese cinema.

Chinese will always be suppressed by their own state and in
other countries second class citizens
.

When you control their lives . Even an cinema outing will seem like a luxury !

Anyway, it's just a movie! It's so "cartoon" too as u see Chen Zhen bcomes a masked hero standing high on the tower over-watching Shanghai! Where on earth a kungfu icon bcomes a "cartoon" figure? Hahaha

The garb with him in the mask reminds us at once of Bruce Lee's Kato in the Green Hornet. So is this a fusion of Fist of Fury and the Green Hornet?

yah he looked like Green Hornet's sidekick.

I have to say Donnie yen's action sequence was typically impressive. Some parts he was as brutal as 导火线. Even got football kicks to the head

The moral of the story? Don't be a traitor like Chiang Kai Shek.

was he really a traitor? I thought he was more of a coward, prefering to monitor the nanjing invasion "from afar"...

nice show, shu qi aged a bit but still eye candy

anthony wong impressed with his interpretation of his role

but the chen zhen interpretation by donnie yen is lacking (in the ending sequences) in relation to jet li's cold determination and bruce lee's smouldering fury; quite disorienting when a cartoon figure appears, might as well show him in lingerie

The Joker doesn't know his priorities. When the Japanese invaded he was busy fighting the Communist instead of the Japanese. It was only after Zhang Xueliang kidnapped him and demanded he unite with the communist to fight the Japanese that he agreed to stop. Even then he started whacking the Commies not long after while still fighting the Japanese.

I agree with your assessment. Donnie Yen has suffered a hard fall after the heights with Ip Man. Try this...

No Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen or whomsoever could ever beat this.

This thread reminds me of the words of Nanking Nanking movie director.

He said Chinese in this day and age, with China rising, should be more objective and mature in viewing past Sino-Japanese wars.

Enough of the poor-me, no-dogs-and-cats-and-Chinese-allowed victim's mentality.

Ha, Bruce Lee - incomparable!

Ironically or perhaps an intentional jibe, the nunchaku that Bruce Lee wielded so proficiently and effectively was a Japanese weapon by origin.

Ramseth,

Whilst looking at the link you gave, i came across this clip of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Did not know he was an extra then. If I remember correctly I also saw a clip where Sammo Hung was an extra, but could not find the link.
