IT outages have been reported across the world, affecting flights, banking and company operations in countries such as Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Australia.
The disruptions are due to an issue at cybersecurity software firm CrowdStrike, which is affecting Microsoft's Windows operating system. It is not a cyberattack, CrowdStrike said on Friday (Jul 19).
- Here in Asia, airports in Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and India are among those affected, with long lines seen at check-in counters. Jetstar Japan has cancelled or delayed some of its domestic flights.
- Malaysia's airport operator said some airlines have been affected. They include low-cost carrier AirAsia. Railway operator KTMB’s ticketing system was also hit.
- The problems are due to an issue at cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which said a defect was found in a "single content update for Windows hosts". Microsoft said it was taking "mitigation actions" in response to service issues.
- Major US air carriers including Delta, United and American Airlines have grounded all flights. Elsewhere, flights in Sydney, Spain and Germany have also been affected.
- The London Stock Exchange delayed the start of trade. Sky News in the UK and Australia’s ABC were not able to broadcast live.
'It's been a nightmare': Tempers flare as some passengers at Changi Airport miss their flight
Self-check-in machines were down when CNA's Vanessa Lim arrived at Changi Airport Terminal 1, leading to long queues as check-ins had to be done at the counters. Some passengers CNA spoke to said they were anxious and frustrated as they were unsure they could make it for their flights on time. Others missed their flights due to the global IT outage and a heated exchange ensued at Scoot’s flight management counter.
