Today is a bad day. What a lousy end to the week.
In the morning, I was chided by my tigress boss for wearing jeans. She refused to accept my explanation that HR policy for Friday is dress down day. She said there is no such thing as dress down day if we have a client's meeting. I had to endure her black face the whole morning and afternoon.
This afternoon, at the client's presentation, my tigress boss kept on interrupting me and translated my presentation to Mandarin for the China clients. I can speak Mandarin, but I refused to do so (like my peer colleague) because I do not want to "bend" and compromise my style and my own ways of working.
Singapore has an English speaking working culture. If you cannot understand English, you shouldn't be here in the first place. Of course my peer colleague has a different view on this matter. I respect his own style and his own ways of working if he wishes to speak dual languages in his presentation.
The tigress boss interrupted me so much that I was unable to present my creative ideas and thoughts smoothly and seamlessly. It was sort of a disaster.
After the meeting ended at 4.30pm, my tigress boss asked to see me in her office. She gave me a lecture about my bad presentation skills and chided me again. She even insulted the university I had graduated from.
So, I rebutted and said it's all her fault because she kept on interrupting my presentation flow to translate for the China clients. In return, she accused me of being "inflexible, stubborn and lacking basic communication skills".
And she said I need to pull up my socks, otherwise, she will part ways with me.
What's wrong with insisting on English as a way and means of communication. If I am Indian or Malay, surely, she cannot scold me right? Just because I am a Chinese and I can speak Mandarin, it doesn't mean I should be taken advantage by China clients. I am working in Singapore, not China.
Am I inflexible, stubborn or lacking in basic communication skills as she had alleged?
Any constructive views for me will be seriously appreciated for my own self examination.
Thank you in advance.
