A Singapore Management University (SMU) student was arrested on Tuesday (8 January) morning for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman on campus.
Police they were alerted at 6.34am to a case of aggravated outrage of modesty at 90 Stamford Road, which is the address of SMU’s School of Economics. A 22-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case and investigations into the matter are ongoing, said a police spokesman.
Yahoo News Singapore understands that the alleged victim, believed to be in her 20s, is a student from another university. It is unclear as to whether the victim and suspect were acquainted with one another prior to the incident.
The assault is believed to have taken place inside a group study room at the school. A picture of the room cordoned off with police tape has been making its rounds on social media.
On her Instagram account, the alleged victim claimed she had been asleep and had woken up to the suspect taking advantage of her. She also said she had to struggle to break free from him and was “bruised” in the process.
“I didn’t ask for anything,” she said in response to people commenting on her posts about the incident.
