An annotated drive on the scenic & quickest route from Flagstaff to the South Rim of Grand Canyon national park for a day's stroll on a paved footpath along the canyon rim.

For first-timers choosing between one of the three routes, this one, the most direct, goes past no other center of settlement, connects to no other distant places, so has the lightest traffic volume. Once 5 - 10 minutes north of the least-congested north side of downtown Flagstaff, it is clear sailing to the first stop-sign at Valle, a motorists' service center an hour away, at the junction of US 180 (this highway) and State Road 64, the road which also carries traffic to and from Interstate 40 and the town of Williams in the south (all of which will appear on another drive video in this series). A few miles before the toll gate of the park is the last "service town," Tusayan, of hotels and eateries, all charging premium prices.

On busy summer days, single-day visitors are advised by the national park's website to park their vehicles here (in Tusayan "town"), and take the park's free shuttle for entry into the park.

Nearly all of this lightly used road between Flagstaff and Valle, US 180, is a two-lane road (one lane in each direction), with occasional additional passing lane for traffic in one direction or the other.

On the day that I drove it in early June, the traffic was never heavy enough to form a line of vehicles waiting impatiently to pass a slow vehicle ahead, so the drive was most enjoyable (for me as well as for anyone catching up to me from behind).

US 180 is mostly straight, with frequent gentle curves not requiring significant speed reductions, but enough to break the monotony of the all straight-road drive.

For those who "just" want to get from Flagstaff to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as quickly as possible for the day, this is the recommend route there and back.

that video shows the route from flagstaff to the grand canyon south rim via us-180. at the town of (north or rural) williams many miles ahead, us-180 meets az-64 and both of them become the same route going north to the south rim. this accident happened south of the junction of us-180 and az-64. the pic i posted showed the grand canyon inn where the junction of 180 and 64 is. that is about 5 miles north of the accident site. the site should be just yards near the southern part of (north or rural) williams (on right side of az-64). the closest cross street of the site with a way into (north) williams is west main street. there’s a dirt road on the left before w. main street but it goes nowhere. look up az-64 and west main street, williams junction, and you’ll know where i’m pinpointing. there’s a smaller town of williams south of az-64 on the map, but that’s not the williams i’m referring to. that williams is on route-66 (“business” highway 40) and 40 becomes az-64 going north, not interstate 40 or i-40. (business) highway 40 runs parallel to i-40. “business” highways are colored green while interstate freeways are colored red, white and blue.

3 Singaporeans killed, 1 injured in Arizona highway accident


Their silver Hyundai crossed the painted median on State Route 64, colliding with a green Dodge van in a fatal crash that killed the drivers of both vehicles, the Arizona Department of Public Safety told Channel NewsAsia.


SINGAPORE: Three Singaporeans were killed and another injured in a road accident in the United States last Friday (Dec 22).

The four were en route to the Grand Canyon in Arizona in a silver Hyundai sedan, when it collided head-on with a Dodge van.

The Hyundai was travelling northbound on State Route 64 and "crossed the painted median, colliding with a green Dodge van travelling southbound", the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in response to Channel NewsAsia's queries about the incident.

"The Dodge van travelled off the roadway and into a ravine. The Hyundai then collided with a third vehicle."

The driver of the Hyundai and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while another passenger in the Hyundai was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center.

The driver of the Dodge van was also pronounced dead at the scene, and four passengers in the van were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center.

No injuries were reported from the third vehicle.

Initial US media reports suggested that the Singaporeans had been travelling in the van.

The injured Singaporean is currently in a stable condition and remains warded in hospital, Channel NewsAsia understands.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said it would not release the identities of those killed until it confirms that all next of kin have been notified.

Channel NewsAsia understands the Singapore Consulate General in San Francisco is rendering its assistance.

Couple and son die in Arizona highway accident: Daughter, an NTU student, survives

A Singaporean family of four was on a vacation in Arizona when they were caught in an accident, killing the couple — 62-year-old Mr Yeo Heng Soon, 56-year-old Madam Chua Cher Hwee — and their son, Mr Justin Yeo Jun Xi, 22.

The couple’s daughter, Ms Justlyn Yeo Jing Hui, 19, was the sole survivor of the accident which happened on Friday (Dec 22) around 2.21pm local time (5.21am, Saturday in Singapore).

Justin, a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) scholar, was a sophomore at the University of California, Berkeley, and the family had gone on a holiday to visit him.

He was among the top A-level graduates in Dunman High School in 2013, and received the SAF Merit Scholarship in 2015, reports The Straits Times.

As a university undergraduate, he co-founded Dingo, an app that allows users to easily notify friends when they have reached their intended destination, without having to send out text messages. He had also recently joined an entrepreneurship fraternity.

The family was travelling in a silver Hyundai towards the Grand Canyon when their car crossed the painted median and collided head-on with a green Dodge van, and crashed into a third vehicle.

Justin was driving the vehicle during the time of the accident.

Mr Yeo, Madam Chua, and Justin were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Yeo, survived and was conveyed to Flagstaff Medical Center where she is believed to have undergone spinal surgery.

The first-year student at the Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Wee Kim Wee School of Communications and Information is reportedly in a stable condition after being transferred out of the intensive care unit (ICU).

Relatives have flown over from Singapore to the United States to take care of her.

A neighbour of the Yeos told Lianhe Wanbao that the Yeo Siblings were polite, filial and quite close to one another.

Following the accident, a 70km stretch of the highway was closed off for seven hours to allow investigations to take place.

The driver of the Dodge van which fell into a ravine following the collision, is from Spain and also died at the scene.

A total of five people, including four passengers in the Dodge van were injured.

There were no reported injuries from the third vehicle.
