Besides the mentally ill (not depression), the ones that kill themselves are usually bright or do well in academically. I have yet to hear of a dumb person killing themselves. The tipping point is usually stress, broken relationship, unable to provide for their families, loss of job or tend over personalise responsibility etc. Recently I think the notion of depression has taken on a meaning that send some into a state that they were never in in the first place.

Some of them were not lucky to have the support that others had.

I have yet to hear a Malay commit suicide as their culture and religion forbids it. Look at South Korea and Japan where education and success is a pressure cooker and their rates higher. Its culture and society and support that will make a difference.

My son is studying in RJC too. But he's way tougher. He's doing well in his studies, ECA and is popular with the girls. I've warned him about getting his classmates pregnant though.

I have spoken to counselors and psychiatrists on this before. The number one factor that keeps cropping up its family pressure. This can be either family putting undue pressure on the kid to perform, or family conflict creating stress that other kids don't have to go through.

When family support is absent or the family is itself a hostile environment, the kid has no safety net and is perpetually in a vulnerable state emotionally. When an external event occurs, the kid may not have the wherewithal to cope.

I've personally seen cases where the mother throws her adopted daughter out of the house repeatedly at the tender age of 13 and lets her sleep in the void deck or park when it is pouring cats and dogs. She ended up getting taken advantage of repeatedly over the years over the years when trying to sleep outside.

When benjamin lim case broke, the number one comment i heard from this group was "was he scared his father would trash him"? I am not trying to speculate here without proof. Just stating that family stress is the number one thing these chaps think of. Child psychologists know that kids don't commit suicide because they think their future is ruined. It takes something else.

During our time, I never really understood what was the big deal about exams. It was just something we had to go through. Only started intensive studying 2 weeks before the exams. And we would all be laughing at how we farked it up after each paper. I was prepared to repeat after each final year exam. No big deal.

I was the top student in my primary school, but when I went into RI, I was not even at the top 10.How could this be ? I was depressed for a while. Then I realized that it was here in RI that I was competing with the best of the best from all the primary schools in Singapore. I didn't jump , but I persevered on slowly and steadily. I wasn't in the top 10 all my years there, but I always gave my best to compete. I survived and I know I will survive wherever I am later in life.

It taught me a lesson in life. Out there in the world, we are also competing with the best of the best from all over the world. We are not always the best, but as long as we give our best to compete, we will survive and there is always a place for us in the world.

u sound like u had it easy,ur ego was only slightly bruised,most of us would not even dare to imagine or claim that we should belong in the top 10 of RI or even the top 500 and then to have that illusion shattered and reality prick our bubble.many of us were worst of then u,we are not as superior and reality was much harsher on us,it did not let us down easy.sometimes i feel many sinkies have skewed evaluations of ourselves or expectations.and we force ourselves to deliver more than we naturally can in order to fulfill the disconnect between our expectations and delusions and what we in reality are capable of.and when it reaches a point where we constantly fail to produce the results and keep up the illusion,we become severely depressed and suffer mental or nervous breakdowns or even worse many young sinkies burn out in their youth and yound adult age or commit suicide.sinkies work very hard and expand alot of energy but the results or returns are average or mediocre,we try hard to be more than who we are but.....i wonder is this a symptom of our education system or a sickness in our society.Singapore is nothing but a fishing village of coolies and farmers trying to be a fake psuedo world class tier 1 city.

my sis was a IB student in Dunman high but sometimes i wonder if its really worth it judging from her experience.

While I pumped in a lot of money into my kids' tuition and enrichment, I told them that if they screwed up in the singapore system, I would send them to study in Australia along with the other losers who can't cope with our system. So my kids don't have any good reason to up the lorry simply because they didn't get all their straight 'A's.

Fortunately for me, both my kids are doing fine in school. So, I don't think I need the Australia option any time soon. I hope they both will win top PSC scholarships and make sinkie taxpayers pay for their further studies.

So ministers and PM can slack without being caught. The press is merely a mouthpiece of the PAP. Journalists don't investigate or raise issues of concern.

Singapore is a successful nation against all odds and it is because the leadership does not shy away from making hard decisions and dealing with major issues that would swamp lesser mortals.
