SINGAPORE: Members of the public can pay their final respects to the late former President S R Nathan on Thursday (Aug 25).
The casket bearing Mr Nathan's body left his home at Ceylon Road in a private hearse at about 8.45am. The hearse was received by Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob at Parliament House, and transferred onto the bier to lie in state from 10am on Thursday to 12pm on Friday.
President Tony Tan Keng Yam is expected to pay his respects, after which the public can do so between 10am to 10pm on Thursday, before Mr Nathan receives a State Funeral on Friday afternoon.
Mr Nathan, Singapore's sixth and longest-serving President, died at the age of 92 at the Singapore General Hospital on Monday, three weeks after suffering a stroke.
Scores of Mr Nathan's friends and colleagues attended a private wake at his house on Tuesday and Wednesday, while public tributes poured in at a site set up at the Istana to honour him.
Mr Nathan received the highest state honour given to a leader as the state flag was draped over his casket.
The flag will be placed with the crescent and stars lying over the head and close to the heart, an apt symbol for a man said to have carried his love and sense of duty for the country throughout his years in public service.
