Man arrested for online threat against Kenneth Jeyaretnam

A 23-year-old was arrested today for transmitting an online threat against Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam.

The Police said the arrest arose from the report lodged by Mr Jeyaretnam on Jan 18. On that day, Mr Jeyaretnam had been spotted leaving the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre.

Mr Jeyaretnam has said that he and his family have been receiving death threats since he was announced as a candidate for the Punggol East by-election.

One of the threats involved two e-mails that were sent to his son who lives in London.

The Police have classified the case as Criminal Intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. It said that investigations are ongoing.

The Police did not reveal the identity of the person arrested

In the past, before the advent of sms, e-mails, etc...many Singaporeans serving the community, received death threats via letters, phones and directly on the face, but none made any reports for all this was considered as part and parcel of work. Many are still living (some of them maybe living in tents by the beaches).

If I were KJ, I will forgive whoever that culprit maybe or whatever his political affiliations, if any.

This will increase KJ's stature in the eyes of the community just like the civil servants of the past.

Why would people give him low political points by standing up for democracy and not giving in to threats by WP supporters?

Well, at the minimal, KJ should just made it open that he is willing to forgive and forget and bearing no grudges against the person. If the police still insist on pressing charges, it would be their call, not his.

Politics is all about wayang to gain popularity. If he does not know how to play this game, he should just quit.

The person who threatened him was not against his face, he wanted him to step aside for WP.

The threats against Kenneth's family were real and not an exaggeration as some in the online community have suggested. I have said it before, and I will say it again. Kenneth was right in lodging that report. He has to protect his family. Supporter of WP you all are wrong!!!
