Updated book on court sentencing launched
SINGAPORE: A third edition of a book that captures day-to-day sentencing decisions in the Subordinate Courts has been launched.
The double volume edition includes updated chapters to reflect new legislation such as the Criminal Procedure Code in 2011 and the revamp of the Penal Code in 2008.
It also documents offences that have become prevalent in the last decade, such as unlicensed moneylending and employment-related offences.
Lawyers say the book is a very useful reference for them.
Mr Amolat Singh, solicitor at Amolat & Partners, said: "Prior to the sentencing practice book, we had to go about talking to fellow lawyers in the bar room or even popping into a court to see what kinds of sentences were being meted out.
"Now we do not feel handicapped when we go into court because we may not know cases that are not reported."
The book, which costs S$535, was put together by 27 district court judges. It was launched by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon at the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The book comes 10 years after the second edition was launched.
