BATU PAHAT: The marine police have foiled a bid to smuggle more than a tonne of sugar that was stashed under a huge load of bricks in a boat compartment. Four men, all Indonesian nationals, have been detained.

Marine police (region 2) deputy chief Supt N. Kalai Chelvan said his officers found 1,296kg of sugar while inspecting the boat which was docked at Sungai Batu Pahat, at about 11pm on Wednesday.

“This is the first time this year we have managed to foil a bid to smuggle out sugar.
“We had previously stopped attempts to smuggle other types of controlled items such as oil,” he said.

“The sugar – worth more than RM2,700 – was stashed under a large load of bricks, which were being transported by the Indonesian registered vessel,” he said. Supt Kalai Chelvan added that the boat had since been taken to the marine police jetty here for further investigations.

In another incident, marine police nabbed three Indonesians and seized nearly RM300,000 worth of contraband cigarettes after a short speedboat chase off the Pontian coast.

Supt Kalai Chelvan said the marine police recovered 26,400 packets of contraband cigarettes worth RM291,626 from the vessel. Supt Kalai Chelvan urged those with information on smuggling activities to contact the marine police at 07-2372222 or 07-2376122.
