SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 37-year-old suspected housebreaker, in connection with thefts at several private residential estates across the island. Between Aug 26 and Sep 4, a series of break-ins were reported at Dunbar Walk, Kurau Terrace, Binchang Rise, Chwee Chian Road, Lynwood Grove and Jalan Punai.

A news release from the Singapore Police Force on Friday (Sep 5) said the culprit may have snuck into the homes by scaling boundary walls and climbing through unsecured doors and windows. He removed valuables lying around whilst occupants of the homes were asleep.

Officers from the Bedok Police Division, Public Transport Security Command, Police Intelligence Department and Criminal Investigation Department conducted detailed crime analysis, and tried to stage various ambush operations at private residential estates, but police say he "proved to be elusive".

However the suspect was arrested at noon on Thursday near Kallang Road, in an operation led by the Bedok Police Division and the Police Intelligence Department. They recovered cash amounting to S$800, and an assortment of foreign currencies from him, as well as three mobile phones, two mobile phone cables and three SIM card adaptors. They also seized a disposable surgical mask and a cap as evidence.

The man will be charged in court on Saturday for housebreaking and theft by night, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years.
