SINGAPORE - A home-grown fashion designer has been accused of cheating a customer out of a photo shoot package.
Administrative executive Katrina Rawther, 44, claims that Dicky Ishak, who once designed a dress for the Miss Universe Singapore pageant, sold her a $1,000 photo shoot package featuring his designs and never delivered.
She has been unsuccessful in contacting him since.
The two met in June last year, when Ms Katrina hired a local bridal services company to take self-portraits dressed in traditional costume. The company had engaged Dicky to assist in the styling.
He told her he was a fashion designer who had designed for the national beauty pageant, and suggested that she hire him in the future.
He also showed her newspaper clippings of his work and talk shows he had been featured on, Ms Katrina told The Straits Times.
In July, Dicky allegedly reached out to propose a photo shoot, in which he would loan her three costumes he had designed for her to be photographed in, for a fee of $1,000.
Thinking it would make a nice birthday treat for herself, she agreed - with the condition that the photos be out by Sept 16, her birthday.
She transferred $300 to him via PayNow on July 17 as a deposit and the remaining $700 on Aug 25. With payment settled, they scheduled the shoot for Sept 6.
On the day of the shoot, Dicky called and told her that his photographer had tested positive for Covid-19 and had to postpone the shoot, said Ms Katrina. He told her that he would get back to her with a new shoot date by Sept 16.
Come Sept 16, he contacted her to say he was possessed and required spiritual healing, she said. He sent her what he said was "proof" of the possession, which included pictures, videos and an audio file shown to ST. Ms Katrina agreed to postpone once more.
That same day, she noticed he was active on Instagram, and contacted him to ask if they could meet since he seemed fine. When the message was sent on WhatsApp with only "one tick" - which means the message had not been delivered to the recipient or read - she panicked and tried to contact him via his other social media channels.
On his TikTok page, she posted a comment asking, "Did you delete your number, because I can't contact you?", to no avail.
She brought the case to Small Claims Tribunals, but was told he did not have a business licence. She then filed a police report and approached ST in October with her story.
