Ming Yi

Controversial Buddhist monk Ming Yi has been relieved of his duties as trustee
and president of Foo Hai Chan monastery’s charity though he will remain as
the temple’s religious leader, according to a report from Asiaone.
He was sentenced to four months in jail for misappropriation of funds this
year which bars him from being a charity trustee in the future under the law.
Ming Yi came under the spotlight again soon after his release by throwing an
extravagant dinner to celebrate his 20th year anniversary as abbot of
Foo Hai Chan monastery which allegedly cost $200,000, prompting some
senior leaders within the Buddhist community to set up a panel to censure him.

Despite his conviction, Ming Yi apparently still have many supporters in
Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong who attended his dinner.

He has not commented on the latest fracas and it is
not known if he is currently in Singapore.
