Prostitute's death - it's murder

By Elena Chong

THE assailant of a Malaysian prostitute who was brutally stabbed in her abdomen at Flanders Square two years ago remains at large. A verdict of murder by an unknown was recorded by State Coroner Victor Yeo at an inquiry into the death of Ms Ng Gaik Sim on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old woman was knifed in the abdomen at the brothel near Serangoon Road on Oct 25, 2008.
Ms Ng alias Coco, a divorcee, had travelled to and from her home in Malaysia to Singapore daily for work since 2006. The court heard that she was known to be a blunt and straightforward person by nature.

She would refuse to serve Indian and Bangladeshi patrons and would sometimes hurl abusive language at her clients.
At around 7pm on Oct 25 that year, four other prostitutes at the premises heard the sound of door latching coming from Coco's room. Moments later, they heard the slamming of her room door.

Coco was next seen stepping out of her room, saying in Cantonese that someone had stabbed her. She then collapsed on the floor. She was pronounced dead at about 7.25pm.
A dark-complexioned, medium-build man in his 30s with a pimple-scarred face and short, slightly curly hair was seen walking hurriedly out of the premises at around the time.

Coco's room was not ransacked nor was there any sign of struggle. Her valuables were found intact. In his findings, Coroner Yeo said the killer had targeted Ms Ng and had obviously planned the attack. He felt that sex was not in the mind of the assailant.

SINGAPORE: More details have emerged on the circumstances surrounding the still-unsolved 2008 murder of a prostitute at 22 Flanders Square in Little India.

Forty-one-year-old Ng Gaik Sim, also known as Coco, was killed after she was stabbed once in her abdomen in her room at the brothel on October 25, 2008.

The Coroner's Court heard on Wednesday that one of her fellow prostitutes, 39-year-old Thong Chow Moey had spotted a man walking out of the premises shortly after Ms Ng was stabbed that evening.

Ms Thong, who occupied a nearby room, said the dark-complexioned man, believed to be either Malay or Indian, was seen walking briskly out of the brothel.

He was about 1.6 metres tall, sported short curly hair and was last seen wearing an orange-yellow T-shirt.

She added the man had a pimple-scarred face and was over 30 years old.

The authorities analysed a blood-stained knife as well as a green cap recovered from Ms Ng's room and found that they contained the DNA of an unknown man, believed to be the murder suspect.

The man's DNA profile has been stored in a database and to date, it hasn't been matched to anyone's yet.

In the inquiry on Wednesday, State Coroner Victor Yeo said the assailant who had brought the knife to the brothel had planned the attack, and that sex was not on the killer's mind.

The Coroner recorded a verdict of murder by an unknown person on the case.

Prostitute's murder: Killer still at large

Prostitute's murder: Killer still at large

SINGAPORE - The killer of a prostitute, who was murdered in her brothel room in 2008, is still at large and the authorities have yet to pin down his identity.

At a coroner's inquiry in Ms Ng Gaik Sim's death yesterday, State Coroner Victor Yeo recorded a verdict of murder by an unknown person.

Ms Ng, 41, who was also known as Coco, was stabbed in her abdomen at a brothel in Little India.

A prostitute Ms Thong Chow Moey, 39, told the inquiry that she saw a dark-complexioned man hurrying out of the brothel shortly after Ms Ng was killed.

Ms Thong described the man as about 1.6-m tall. He had short curly hair and was wearing an orange T-shirt.

The man appeared to be more than 30 years old and had a pimply face.

The authorities analysed a blood-stained knife and a green cap recovered from Ms Ng's room and found that they contained the DNA of an unknown man, probably the murder suspect.

It has not been matched to anyone yet.

Investigating officer Alvin Phua Kia Jong told the court one of the sex workers saw Ms Ng coming out of her room before collapsing onto the floor.

Mr Yeo noted that the attack was premeditated as the killer had brought the knife to the brothel.
